While it was obviously perfect for teachers, parents and grandparents I had failed to realize that the most amazing value of this story is the emotion it stirs up in us all; it makes us want to be better people and treat each other, not just children, more affirmatively and compassionately.

Once, when I showed the Teddy Stallard movie to an audience of five hundred junior high and high school students, the groans, coos, ooos and ahhs were heart connecting.

I asked for the students insights afterwards, they said that the movie:  1) made them realize that no one can ever really know what goes on in someone else’s house, and 2) in the words of many: “I realized that I really can make a difference.”

I choked back my own tears. I had no idea how deeply and profoundly students of this age would experience this story.

When I’ve shown the movie to adult audiences, it still amazes me at how quickly it softens so many tough exteriors people believe they must project.

This movie is a GREAT way to OPEN your upcoming Event or In-Service.

One of the unexpected surprises of the Teddy Stallard Story movie was the response we received from people working in the entrepreneurial, organizational and corporate environments.

While it was obviously perfect for teachers, parents and grandparents I had failed to realize that the most amazing value of this story is the emotion it stirs up in us all; it makes us want to be better people and treat each other, not just children, more affirmatively and compassionately.

When I’ve shown the movie to adult audiences, it still amazes me at how quickly it softens so many tough exteriors people believe they must project.

It’s been reported to me by others using the movie that when it has been shown to men in corporations, most of whom were directors, managers and owners, time after time many of these men openly admitted that they had to stop the movie to collect themselves.

One Fortune 500 company owner told me personally that, while he had heard the story many times before, he still ended up using his shirt sleeve to wipe away the out pour of tears.

Conversely, when women in corporations watched the movie, the reports came in that they did not initially admit to being emotionally affected by it. Only with a little additional prodding would they admit that they were deeply affected and that they did in fact (silently) cry!

I’ve had a “director” personality style woman come up to me and say, “I knew at the start of the story what you were going to try to make me cry, and I was determined not to, but when Teddy said, “You smell like my mom used to” you got me! I cried buckets and it felt long overdue.

When I was traveling around the country speaking in the late 90’s, one of the things I was asked most often at Women’s Conferences was, “How do I not get emotional—or cry—at work?” Men, on the other hand, are now learning how to access – to healthier degrees – their emotional selves, and this is generating vast improvement in how we treat each other.

Men and women alike are all products of our childhoods and our environments. There are a lot of lost and lonely people moderately functioning in our places of work and community. To generate a home and work environment that brings out the very best in people, you simply keep acknowledging people like they really matter.

This movie is a GREAT way to KICK OFF an upcoming Fall Event or In-Service …

This is super important to me because I know what it’s like to be labeled a “problem” child.  So many students today have really great creative minds going untapped because of social-emotional discourse.

Unfortunately far too many of them have no clue how to come up over punitive discipline, adult judgment, bias, limitation, labels and any one of the 28 diagnosed acronyms (ADD/ADHD/OCD/SPC etc.) attached to them when they walk in the classroom each and every day.

You may spend a ton of time and energy coming “at” behavior with rules, threats, hurtful attitudes, vibes and tone, all to “teach them a lesson,” but then you watch them go right back out in the world and fail at decision making again. It sucks. It’s scary. It makes you feel like “what’s the use.”

I know the THRILL of seeing students take charge of their lives and of changing lives (your students’ lives and the lives of your loved ones.) I know what it’s like to have massively successful school years. To wake up in the morning and see that you’ve made more of a positive difference than you could have ever dreamed, especially with the students no one wanted in their classrooms before you came along.

I’ve been on both sides of the coin (super low and super high) and I want to help as many people succeed as I can. There’s room for ALL of us!

Keep It Simple & Straightforward

Dear Difference Maker,

I see you, I feel you and I’ve been there. The constant juggling act of trying to make a difference in the lives of our students and children while battling our own personal struggles can leave us feeling emotionally spent, defeated, disrespected and disregarded.

But fear not, my friends, because I’m here to tell you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s not just the light from the copier at 10 pm on a Sunday night!

Let me take you back to a time when I thought all hope was lost. I had been through years of personal loss and financial turmoil, unable to land a job in my field no matter how many interviews I went on. I was at my wit’s end, feeling like I was constantly swimming against the current with no sign of relief in sight. And then, I met Ralph.

Ralph wasn’t your typical multimillionaire. He wasn’t going to tell me to just “think positive” and everything would magically fall into place.

Instead, he shared three quirky metaphysical principles with me that had helped him become a multi-millionaire. At first, I was skeptical. But as I started to implement these principles into my life, I began to notice an energetic shift.

One of the most unconventional tips Ralph shared with me was to do something that initially felt really weird.

Dear Difference Maker,

If I was going to change people’s lives with my educational books and programs, I still had (and have) a lot of work to do … but I’m up for it in a big way!

After making the major move to Portland, OR, as a single mother of a two-year-old, during my burnout “What the hell have I done” phase, I decided to take myself out to a neighborhood bar to dance one Saturday night where out-of-the-blue, I was befriended by a multi-millionaire.

As a young woman, the only way I knew to become financially stable was to marry someone wealthy. But Ralph wasn’t interested in me in that way.

When I met Ralph, I was in a real financial pickle. Not one of my five job interviews had gotten me a school counseling or teaching job. I was blowing through my savings. I was burnt out from five years of deep, profound personal loss, starting with the loss of my first-born child during labor, and eventually my marriage.

Thankfully, Ralph was very compassionate with me, but he knew that the only way for me to create my own financial freedom was to learn to “think” differently about money. So even though I had very little money left, and as a single mother I was scared out of my mind, he held firm and insisted that I take back control of the wheel and drive, drive, drive.

When someone helps you realize something is possible, it unlocks something inside of you that allows you to actually make it happen.

Because he cared enough about my long-term well-being, he did not offer to give me any money! He did, however, sit with me week after week and help me “think” differently about just how hard I believed my career had to be, given the additional hours every educator is required to put in.

From Burnout to Breakthrough!

He taught me 3 very basic metaphysical principles that he had used to become a multi-millionaire, and that he wanted me to grab a hold of and succeed with:

1. Look myself in the mirror every morning and tell myself… “You are a Success!” (which is where the title of my first book came from)
2. Only do “what is in front of me to do,” and …
3. Utilize nature’s “less effort, more results” model of applying my gifts and talents to designing my dream and the next chapter of my life’s work.

There’s nothing wrong with you.  You’ve got Success Power in your DNA.  You ARE enough.  You have everything within you to be, do, have what you are here to become.

You’ve just got to get yourself up and going again, and you do that by looking in the mirror each morning and tell yourself that “You are a Success!”

When Ralph told me to tell myself that I was a success, when I felt like such a failure at the core of my being, I thought it was ridiculous.  But because he insisted that I try it, I did.

I’d been dragging myself out of bed every single morning in what I like to refer to as a total “downward dog funk!”  Then one morning as I was brushing my teeth, I remembered what Ralph had coached me to do, and I decided to try it.  So I looked in the mirror and told myself that I was a success, repeatedly.  I was surprised that I felt a little better.

And as weird as if felt doing it, I did it every morning that first week, and low and behold, within a few days I was feeling better.

It’s a funny thing about people who feel better … they do better! And that’s exactly what I did.  I started to do better mentally and emotionally and it wasn’t too long after that I tapped into my life’s purpose to write programs about healing today’s children and ourselves.  It’s what I’ve been happily doing now for 30+ years.

Ralph was the very first person in my life to give me permission to utilize my Success Power to create a life I loved living. The burnout I’d been feeling lifted, and I felt focused and on purpose maybe for the first time in my life. I don’t remember ever having felt so clear about the difference I knew I could be making in education.

He showed me how to OWN my inherent success factor instead of hiding it for fear of the skeptical “eye rolls” or the “crickets” I might get because I “made magic” that completely turned around emotionally and behaviorally unskillful kids and adults!

But that’s a story for another day…

Keep It Simple & Straightforward

Dear Difference Maker,

I was scared to share tools I’d developed for myself because I was afraid other people would think they were “woo-woo” … even though they were based in science and PROVEN to work over and over again.

I’ve made it my business to help people take their success power back, by determining what’s “in their control” and what’s “in the control of others.” Then once they identify what has been “in the control of others,” I walk them through my MAPit System for getting their own control back.

What I’ve found is that, people who feel better do better very quickly.

It’s literally as simple as:

1. Getting to the heart of the problem
2. Suspending judgment
3. Writing down preferences

With that formula, I can literally help someone do all of the following and MORE:

* energetically influence any difficult situation in 30 seconds or less
* speak with confidence
* never nag, complain, fuss, argue, fight, yell again if you don’t want to
* empower and engage others
* become a solution generating superpower
* be energized by making a difference
* apply the ‘less effort, more results’ principle quicker, sooner, faster

You can even de-escalate intense situations in 30 seconds or less, more often than not.

I know it sounds incredible, but I’m actually downplaying everything my MAPit System can help people do.

As the doors opened at Portland State University and I began to write my first CE program for educators, I took a deep dive into the Quantum Physics of Interconnectedness. I found a way to explain in logical, measurable, concrete terms, exactly what the “magic” was when I worked with disruptive, emotionally unskillful students to accelerate their learning.

I could finally explain why, at the end of every school year, I was energized and emotionally fulfilled about each and every one of my student’s accomplishments, when far too many other teachers felt the opposite.

I knew what I was going to share was going to work for others because I was able to bring in the science to prove why it works. Plus, it was simple and straightforward.

You can’t have an attitude and keep it a secret!
You can’t secretly dislike a person and expect things to go well.
What you expect, you get.
You limit, you lose.

I had the science. I had the field-tested tools. I had the thinking technology. I had a deeply frustrated, burned-out group of educators ready to learn something new.

As I taught my system, one by one, I could see the light in their eyes come back.

When I heard countless successes each week in our 9 Week Course, I realized I had to STOP hiding what I did differently with problematic students.  I had to START speaking up about what I had to offer that really does work to make a phenomenal difference in the lives of the students we are losing through the cracks of our schools today, forming the school-to-prison pipeline.

I had to STOP downplaying and START owning that I was now an Educational Consultant with much to bring to an old, worn-out authoritarian way of humiliating, dismissing and kicking students out of class/school.  The students who simply hated how their teachers were treating them attitudinally with their harsh words, vibes and tone.

But you wanna know why I really do what I do now? Because it heals wounded hearts, minds and spirits of traumatized kids and changes people’s lives! I am thrilled when I get an email from someone that tells me how my books and programs changed their life…

How they went from holding a tight rein over their students every day to an easy rein…

How they feel like they could relax and breathe again…

How their student’s love of learning was accelerated by simply learning how to DITCH the attitude, vibe and tone so they could energetically empower, engage and encourage students to take back control of their lives.

That’s what keeps me going. To KNOW that I’m making a difference in the world… having an impact that reaches far beyond me!

And that’s just scratching the surface…

Keep It Simple & Straightforward

Dear Difference Maker,

If you’re going to reignite your light, you’ve got to stand up straight, put your shoulders back, take a deep breath and OWN your God-given gifts and talents.

In my tenth year in education, I was sitting in my counseling office working with a high school student, his parents and the teacher involved, when I realized I had a three-step system that I was using with every single counseling situation that walked through my door.

The light went on as I realized I could teach others (teachers, administrators and parents) to do what I was doing. What I did was quick, effective and painless for everyone involved. Problematic areas were getting resolved because, with just a few questions, I was getting to the heart of the problem rather than coming “at” the problem. Not one educator I knew was doing what I was doing.

It was shortly after this that I made the decision to move to Portland, OR, and take a leap of faith, trusting that the net would appear. The net did not seem to appear! I had five interviews lined up. When I got the call from each of the interviewing Principals they each said, “You gave a great interview, and I honestly don’t know why we’re not going with you, but we’ve selected someone else!”

To my surprise, I felt relief wash over me. Something inside me did not want any of those positions. Was I crazy? I had no job and I’m a single mother in a new city.

It was shortly thereafter that an educational consultant friend of mine asked me point blank, “What is it that you do best, Mary?”

Without even thinking I said, “I make magic with the kids nobody wants in their classrooms.”

I was meant to create a program (actually 10 now) from my system for educators about how to ditch the flippin’ bell curve excuse to just give up on “certain” students, and instead learn how to reach and teach…

Every. Single. Student.

For the first time in my life, I felt my purpose coming up through me, filling up the hole in my soul. I immediately grabbed some paper and a pen and my system literally wrote itself. It’s the same system I’ve applied to my life, my marriage and my blended family for the past 40 years. I still teach it today in education as well as business.

What a journey…
