I will admit that I am a big HGTV and DIY – Do-It-Yourself – TV junkie! I even prefer the commercials that they run for these programs better than other TV shows because they are all about making things better. I love seeing all of the BEFOREs and AFTERs. It encourages others to do the same. This is true of making any place you live, work and play in better than you found it. I can attest to that wonderful feeling of fulfillment you get from helping people feel better and not waiting on any one else to make things better by just going ahead and doing it yourself.
Maybe it’s because I was a farmer’s daughter who was involved in 4-H and raising our own farm animals, growing our own crops and sewing my own clothes that I have an entrepreneurial spirit. After I graduated from college my first job teaching was in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 in a rural school with a full classroom of 26 students. Once a week I’d write four sets of lesson plans in every subject included PE and music. I had no coffee breaks because I was also responsible for recess duty and the school’s Christmas musical each December. If something needed to be done, I did it! After two years I got a job in a regular school with just one grade level per teacher. I brought that entrepreneurial spirit into my new school and it not only served me well, it’s the number one reason why I intentionally created a strong community ethic. I knew just how important it was for my students social and emotionally well being to experience a safe place to be who they were so they could all achieve academic success. Upon arriving at my new school, I quickly set up Independent Learning systems for the students because I wanted them to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and take charge of their learning and their time. What I didn’t know was what an impact this would make on their academic success. I also didn’t realize the impact it would make on the other teachers view of my students having fun learning in my classroom. The Superintendent called me into his office in the spring of my third year there and told me in no uncertain terms that if my students did not do well on the Stanford Achievement Test scores, I would be fired. That several other teachers did not think I was doing a good job because my students were up out of their seats all the time and having fun. That I was setting a poor example for the students in their classrooms because their students all wanted to be in my classroom! When the test results came in I was very pleased and then I drew up a comparison chart on the teachers’ classrooms who were doing all of the complaining about me. My sixth grade students had lost 1-2 years of growth while being in their fourth and fifth grade classrooms while they gained an average of 2.5-3 years of growth during the year they were in my classroom. In all my years of teaching with 55-65% youth who were highly at-risk of failing coming into my classrooms year after year, I never sent one student to the Principal’s office. Later, when I started my own speaking, coaching and training business I started working with other business owners and leadership teams in corporations. I applied the same strategies woven into an entrepreneurial mindset that I’d given to my students. We’re all just little kids in big bodies after all and whether we are in a living or work environment, people just want to feel safe in their human interactions with one another. When the importance of this is not being demonstrated and taught on a daily basis, things can build up and if not addressed can certainly become volatile.
