Dear Difference Maker, Today is the last day for 70% March Madness Savings for my 9 Weeks to a Safe, All-Inclusive Make A Difference Year Curriculum! This past month I’ve been writing about the mega difference just 9 weeks can make in the lives of your students going forward into the next school year by building a community mindset. If there were just one thing that could make your life as a teacher so much easier, this would be the best first step you could ever take to helping everyone feel better so they can do better. Early in my career, I had earned recommendations for being a teacher who could reel in students and classroom situations which had previously been unmanageable. To stay in the town where I went to college, my first teaching position was in a rural school grades 3, 4, 5 and 6.
I found myself correcting until midnight then getting up at 6 a.m. to get ready for the day. I had friends over to help me because I didn’t have time to go out in the evenings anymore. The greatest gift of working at that school my first two years was how incredibly skilled I became in creating systems for writing and teaching 20 lesson plans a week (5 subjects X 4 grade levels), coming up with fun and engaging ideas for physical education, science experiments, art class, music class while never once getting a break because there was literally no time. Did I mention the annual Musical Christmas play? When I hear teachers say that they have too much on their plates and they don’t have time to deal with insubordinate students with social-emotional issues; they don’t have time to take two students aside and give them 30 seconds to work things out; they don’t have time to learn how to teach social-emotional tools and techniques, my first thought takes me back to my first teaching job and what I learned about taking 9-weeks to build a safe, inclusive community so we could be productive academically which gave me so much more time to do other things. My “done-for-you” 9-Week Curriculum is for the teacher who …
This is also for the teacher who …
After I graduated to a job where I got to teach just one grade level, I used to avoid the teacher’s lounges because of all of the negativity there was about how hard teachers felt their jobs were because of certain students. I was having an entirely different experience than the largest percentage of the teachers I was working alongside. Every single year, I was more energized at the end of the school year than I was at the beginning because I was getting to experience the fruits of my labor. My 9 week vigilance of insisting that my classroom always be a Safe Zone no matter what, consistently yielded an academically accelerated group of students even though 55-65% were youth at-risk when they walked in to my classroom at the beginning of the school year. I’m not telling you this to impress you but to impress upon you that students having a hard time of it can and will rise up to your belief in them individually and together within an inclusive, compassionate learning community. And, you must be deliberate and intentional about the vision you hold for them. The day I realized that what I was thinking and doing differently than other teachers was something that anybody could do, was the day I started writing Continuing Education programs like this one to help other busy, stressed out educators have a better time of it. The fact that most of my classrooms had an extraordinary amount of struggling students by the time I got to them, pretty much helped me hone-in on what I wished my teachers would have done for me that I then did for my students. In addition to being a single mother, working a full-time counseling job, I started teaching CE night classes at Portland State University and I’ve never looked back. So when people tell me they don’t have time, I wonder to myself what’s really going on for them emotionally that they won’t take the time to get their minds around something simple and straightforward that will give them considerably more time. There’s no better time than right now to experience the healing power of an Inclusive Culture through this community building curriculum.
