Don’t Ask “Why”

ASKING “WHY” ENCOURAGES people to come up with excuses or justifications. It changes nothing about a person’s responsibility. Asking “why” places a judgment on others, teaching them that somehow, they are accountable to us and not to themselves. In this age of building self-esteem, it is understood that awareness must come from within. Accountability must be experienced internally.

If you want to help someone overcome a harmful behavior, you might ask, “So, what is going on for you?” Ask him about the feelings and thoughts that preceded the action.

Find out the other person’s perception of the situation. Empower him by having him tell you what his options are. Encourage others to become more and more in charge of their thoughts and feelings. Let them know they are not accountable for anyone but themselves. This is where self-esteem is strengthened.

Some theorists say you should not ac knowledge any form of an excuse, but I still like to work with people to give some direction and examples on which to base their future decisions and actions.

The question “Why?” only teaches people to give excuses, to place a judgment, and then to be done with it until it happens again.

The question “What?” gives people a focus, direction, understanding and a natural consequence. “What?” teaches accountability and provides an opportunity to visualize what they would like to see themselves do the next time.

We have forty million reasons for failure,
but not a single excuse.
