Rage Reduction
THIS IS THE NEW FORM OF therapy being used to try to help children resolve the pain and anger associated with early abandonment issues. Anger is an emotion that can take us right through the red lights of life. You know the ones – the times when you say to yourself, “I knew better!” When anger builds up without some form of release, it can cause us to say things that are harmful to ourselves or others. If it is repressed, it can lead to physical discomfort and possibly illness. One form of rage reduction could be a good old-fashioned “cry and carry on spree!” You can get in your car, leaving it turned off and parked in the garage or in the nearest deserted street or parking lot, and then scream your pain away! Scream until the tears come. Tell it like it is, get to what you are really hurt about. Scream until it is gone – until that piece of work is done. Louise Hay, author of You Can Heal Your Life, suggests beating your bed once a week whether it needs it or not. There is also “the hand-over mouth scream,” coupled with stomping your feet. Both can be very effective in either helping you release your anger or making you feel so ridiculous that you will laugh! Another great form of release is to turn up the music in your car radio and sing at the top of your lungs. Whether you know the words or not, sing until you feel physically renewed. Get rid of that built-up tension in a constructive way. Then you can talk to people about the issues at hand. Remember, it is “your” anger and deserves “your” attention! Learn to manage your emotions in ways that clear you out, not block you up. The benefits of releasing your pain will eventually help you pave a road to a greater understanding about “your” participation in the situations where you’ve felt victimized. You may begin to notice as you do this type of work that instead of feeling anger and pain, you begin choosing understanding first and release second. For every minute you are angry, |
