What I did to end my fear of making a mistake ever again!

TGIF!

Before I head out for the weekend, I wanted to share with you how the Difference Maker Creed was born.

It came out of a need to figure out what to do about an unproductive amount of anxiety I was having about a fear of making humiliating mistakes – years ago.

In the midst of worrying way too much one day, I had a talk with myself …

What I said to myself was advise I would have given anyone else:

Mistakes are human. They just are.

So I asked myself, “What can I do differently (other than ruminate for days beating myself up over and over) when I make a mistake?”

“What can I do differently where I don’t have to relive the traumatizing shame and humiliation I suffered as a child and have inadvertently carried forward into my adult life?”

Of course I already knew that greatness was never about perfection, but about what a person does in the face of doing something that is a mistake.  Something that may have caused harm to someone, inadvertently or directly.

But knowing this had never released me from an onslaught of anxiety with every little infraction.

Then on that day, I mentally decided these 5 things about what I can do instead.  I was free to be me from that moment on.  And yes, they work!

I think the biggest problem we cause for ourselves when we make mistakes is deflecting, blaming or JREDDing (Justify, Rationalize, Explain, Defend & Debate).

Not one of these default adulting tactics works to feel good about yourself.  This is what I know for certain:  People that feel better, do better.  And you can quote me!

These 5 things have become my own Difference Maker Creed.  It was really fun to go into Canva and create my own poster that is now on my wall.  I can’t encourage you enough to go do this for yourself – and then have your group/team do one too.

It’s stabilizing.  Calming.

Reaching out …

PS … I love you and appreciate you. Thank you for the difference I know you are making in the world.  Be well.  Be happy.  Be spirit lit and soul fulfilled!

PPS … ONLY 5 More Days before I can tell you what I’ve been working on!  Keep watching!
