Culture Wins!

One more story …

As you may remember, I’ve mentioned this week that I got to give my GREATNESS EXERCISE and do our “I Make A Difference” wristband acknowledgment exchange with my son’s football team, where he’s the head coach. It’s his first year with this bunch, and the game plan he and his coaching staff came up with is all about one thing: Culture Wins.

I’ve also mentioned that I’ve done this exercise with over 20,000 people in a two year period so I thought I’d seen it all!

But here’s the thing that happened with my son’s football team that had never happened before that brings tears to my eyes, even as I write this.

In Step 4 when I called up two volunteers to demonstrate how to introduce themselves by their greatness neither young man had yet come up with three adjectives to describe what was great about themselves – to then introduce themselves by.

I looked out to the group of bright, eager, strapping high school football players and they were on the edge of their chairs.

With a little nod of permission by me, they started yelling out what was great about each of the two players.

I then had each player repeat back – out loud – what their greatness’s were. By the time the team got through with them there were 8-10 for each player!

The caring engagement between the team and the two guys up front with me was off the charts as each player started to own their greatness.

Goosebumps!

Then, after everyone introduced themselves by their greatness and we had the wristband exchange we moved on to creating their team’s Difference Maker’s Creed.

Difference Maker’s Creed

This was the very first time I’d done this with a boys football team.

I was thrilled that they were jumping out of their seats with hands raised with ideas and solutions to taking any situation – i.e., fumbling the ball to scoring the winning touchdown – into something that would help them be the Difference Maker in the moment.

The energy in the room was electric! I want this for you and whatever team or group you may play with, live with and work with.

I writing this today to explain that when you do this, be open to the experience. Within just the first 5+ minutes the team’s energy went from a 3-5 to a 10+.

In all these years of doing this, I have never before had a group so clearly define – out loud – what was great about their fellow team mates.

We may be thinking good things about someone else, but it takes a decision to be a difference maker and say them out loud right then and there.
