Today’s TurnAround is … We Teach People How To Treat Us

This is a powerful reminder that we hold the key to how we are treated by others.

Just like a mirror reflects our own image, we teach people how to treat us. It’s a simple concept, yet holds a tremendous impact on our lives, especially when it comes to our relationships with children.

Imagine this scenario: a child, yearning for guidance and respect, is met with a lack of positive regard from their caregiver.

It is incongruous to demand respect from a child when we ourselves fail to show them the same respect.

It’s like pushing a vulnerable soul to the ground, placing our foot on their shoulder, and yelling, “Get Up!”

Instead, let us embrace a more compassionate approach and give children the respect they deserve. By doing so, we pave the way for a reciprocal relationship built on mutual understanding and trust.

Did you know that children’s IQs are already highly developed by the tender age of two?  By engaging children compassionate curiosity, regardless of their age, we can empower them to reach for the heart of the problem;  to start putting words to their thoughts first and emotions over time.

Rather than resorting to disruptive or negative behavior, little by little they can learn to speak their truth – truth to power – about their feelings in a constructive manner.  This works for adults too.  Thoughts first, feelings second.

This open line of communication fosters emotional intelligence and allows for healthier, more nurturing relationships with children.

FOR THE FUN OF IT:  So if it IS true that we teach people how to treat us, the next time you are ready to give someone a big “what for” about an obvious poor choice in behavior, STOP yourself and remember that the reaction you are about to give them is actually teaching them how to treat you in return, one day.
