Nevertheless

NeverthelessARE YOU EXHAUSTED WITH THE CONSTANT complaints and resistance to whatever it is you are asking to be done? My son has his own ideas about how he would like things to be, and I have mine. Without overpowering him, I first try to really listen to him when he doesn’t want to do things my way, such as obey a boundary I am establishing.

I listen and then say, “I understand that you would rather do this another way, nevertheless, I am the mom, and I am the one who expects you to follow through with what I’ve asked.” If he still chooses not to comply, he is then given two options.

Nevertheless, establishes that you’ve heard someone’s differing opinions, that it’s O.K. to have a different view, and that you’ve acknowledged them and stated that their desires do matter. Nevertheless, is a long word for “however.” It reduces the drama of resistance in children and adolescents. (Adults too!) There is something about long words that captures a person’s attention and lets him know you still mean business!

Few things are impossible
to diligence and skill . . .
Great works are performed not by strength,
but of perseverance.
