You Must First Change Yourself
PUT A STAR BY THIS ONE. THIS IS THE strongest and most powerful strategy I have come across. I don’t always like it because I’d really rather the other person do the changing. At those times when nothing I’ve tried has worked with a person, I stop and remember this strategy. It often aggravates me as I know it will work when I apply it. I have to be willing to see things from a new perspective in order to see it work. It generally has to do with an aspect of my attitude that I don’t want to surrender or give up about someone. I’d much rather have something “on” someone else than admit that I was wrong in some way. So, I sometimes go into this strategy stomping my feet and grumbling in my head. Yet when I get honest with myself, I realize that I have a negative attitude about them. They may have felt this from the way I’ve interacted with them, even though I’ve done my best to hide it from them and myself. They resisted working with me at a level which I wanted. Why wouldn’t they? After all, I’m the one with an attitude! Oh, yes, they might have an attitude about me as well, and I’ll have to let that go too if I have any hopes of getting along with this person. The real magic is that their attitude about me changes almost instantaneously as a result of my changing my thinking. You don’t have to believe this works, just try it as honestly as you can and see what happens! Everybody thinks of changing humanity, |
