BREAKER LINE

Dear Difference Maker,

Focus on doing the work to learn the better ways to engage students is what created a 4.7 point improvement in Mary Ann’s students’ scores!

Opportunity found Mary Ann because she focused on getting control back. She made a decision to get really good at empowering her students to self-regulate and be peaceful enough to accelerate their learning power.

I do it for today’s children and the weary, frustrated, worried adults who live with, work with and care for them; especially for the one’s getting themselves labeled “problem,” “behaviorally challenging,” “dysregulated,” “spirited” or any one of the 34 different diagnosed acronyms (ADD/ADHD/OCD/SPC etc.).

Let me share a quick case study with you about a person I helped.

One of my favorite examples is of a teacher who was able to break her cycles of failure and heal herself and her students at the same time.

Shortly after I started teaching my CE courses in the evenings at PSU, I accepted a job as an elementary counselor where I met the first-grade teacher, Mary Ann.

The night before parent-teacher conferences, I needed to see Mary Ann about the results of an assessment I had given her children. I found her in her classroom with stacks of work in front of her. She seemed burned out, beaten down and worried, and we were just at the end of the first quarter of the school year.

I sat down and she immediately told me she didn’t know what to do. She feared that there would be some angry parents coming in the next two days for conferences. She didn’t know how she was going to explain why her children weren’t as far along in their schoolwork as the children in the other first-grade classrooms.

The facts: I reminded her that the assessment that I had given her students recently revealed that 56% of her classroom were students considered at-risk behaviorally and academically.

What this means to a teacher, even the most competent of teachers, is that initially, they may have to be three times as focused and intentional to keep this population of students in their seats, let alone teach them how to pay attention and stay present during the school day.

Breaking the cycle: I invited her to consider taking my upcoming course. Her spirit lifted.

Mary Ann immediately signed up for my PSU course, “Breaking the Cycles of Failure” which is now “Academic Success 101: Accelerate Learning in Every. Single. Student.”

She was an eager student. In this adult setting, it was inspiring to watch her work through her issues openly and try to learn and understand how to be more effective with her students, and in her life. I was privileged to watch her take risks with other adults and with me that she had never taken before.

As we moved through each week’s lesson, she reported that her students were accelerating exponentially. She came to evening classes looking reignited with color in her cheeks. She began as a quiet observer and became an active participant.

The result of all of her taking my course was that her class had markedly improved on the same assessment given again in the spring. The standard improvement normally shown by the best of teachers would be an increase of maybe 2 points. Mary Ann’s class had increased its overall score, 4.7 points.

This was unheard of.

Needless to say, both she and her students broke through many cycles of failure in those seven months. Occasionally, I would hear other teacher’s taking notice of her accomplishments in the teacher’s lounge. With the right tools, her ability to accelerate her first grader’s love of learning reignited her light.

But I’m getting ahead of myself…

I’d love to hear from you about this. Does Mary Ann’s story resonate with you at all?

Now I know you might not think (or maybe you do) that you have the time or energy to learn how to deal with social-emotional issues so you can accelerate your student’s learning power (or maybe you do) like Mary Ann.

But do you need help reigniting your light?

By the way, for those of you that are educators, what do you teach (or want to teach)? I’d love to know, especially because it’ll help me know more about my subscribers and how I can help you do better with YOUR energy and control.

[TurnAround Thursday] Simplest Solution, Best Solution?

Hey there, Difference Maker!

I know being the adult in the room with today’s youth can be work, but you don’t have to keep fussing, arguing, and fighting with your kids all the time. There’s something called Ockham’s razor that can help you out.

Ockham’s razor is a philosophical principle that states that the simplest solution is usually the best one. This means that when faced with a problem, you want to look for the simplest solution and avoid overcomplicating things.

So, when it comes to working with kids, the simplest solution can be the most effective one.

Instead of getting into a long argument with kids, take a step back and look for the simplest way to solve the problem.

Ockham's Razor

Stop asking “why” (head) questions and start asking “what” (heart) questions then lean into collaboration solutions together.

This will help you from losing your cool and avoid getting into a heated debate.

This doesn’t mean you should be a pushover, but it does mean that if you look for the simplest solution first and avoid overcomplicating the situations, things most likely will run much smoother.

It may seem too good to be true, but Ockham’s razor can help make adulting with today’s youth (and the adults we live, love and work with), less hard and so much more enjoyable.

So, give it a try and watch as your life gets simpler and your stress levels reduce.

Plus, you’ll be able to keep your cool and avoid the fear of missing out on a more enjoyable experience!

Simplest Solution, Best Solution!

[TurnAround Thursday] Slow Down, Get More Done

Hey there, Difference Maker!

Are you tired of feeling like you’re always running around trying to keep up with the demands of life?

Do you ever feel like you just can’t keep up?

Well, it’s time to take a break and slow down. You heard me, slow down!

That’s right, slowing down is actually the key to getting more things done.

You may be thinking, “How can that be?”

It seems so counterintuitive.

Here’s a funny thing about that.  If something feels counterintuitive, it’s most likely that it is in fact, intuitive.

Growing up, we were often told we do know what we know, feel what we feel or want what we want.

Our intuition, starts getting squashed early in life and as we grow up and leave home, if we don’t listen to our intuition we can find ourselves between a rock and a hard spot.  Right!?

The truth is, when you take a step back and slow down, you’re actually able to be more productive, efficient, and get more done in less time.

Let’s face it, when you’re constantly running around and trying to do too many things at once, you’re not really getting anything done!

slow down to speed up

You’re just spinning your wheels and wasting your valuable time and energy. But when you slow down and take things one step at a time, you can actually get more done in less time.

So the next time you feel like you’re running out of time and can’t keep up with the demands of life, take a break and slow down. Don’t be afraid to take a breather and give yourself the time and space you need to relax and recharge.

You’ll be amazed at how much more productive you can be when you slow down and take things one step at a time. So stop worrying about FOMO (fear of missing out) and start taking the time to slow down and get more done!

[TurnAround Thursday] The Kids Are Home! Yayyyyyy!?

Brought to you by: MaryReynolds.com

30SecTAChildren Teach Us What We Need To KnowLet's Get Started

Hey there, Difference Maker!

It’s finally summer and the kids are out of school, leaving adults who love, live and work with kids, the not-so-glamorous task of trying to keep them entertained and behaving.  You’ve already tried the usual tactics of bribing them with treats and threatening them with punishments, but let’s face it—the novelty of those things has worn off.  So what can you do to make sure the kids in your care stay in line and don’t spiral into a FOMO-induced frenzy?

laughter and fun

Well, the quickest and fastest way to get your kids to behave is to start with a good dose of laughter. Studies have shown that laughter is a powerful tool in getting kids to listen and behave. So don’t be afraid to let loose and have a little fun with your kids. Take turns telling jokes, play improv games, and create silly stories together. Not only will it put your kids in a better mood, but it will also help to build a stronger bond between you.

Another great way to keep your kids in check is to encourage them to be creative. Sure, it’s tempting to plop them in front of a screen and let them watch their favorite shows, but that’s not going to do much to help them behave. Instead, come up with creative activities that will help keep them engaged and focused, such as building forts, making crafts, or playing dress-up. Anything that allows them to use their imaginations and express themselves is a win-win.

Finally, be sure to make time for yourself. It can be easy to get caught up in the chaos of trying to keep your kids in line, but it’s important to take a step back and remember to take care of yourself. Make sure to carve out some time each day to do something that makes you happy and helps you relax. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk, or listening to music, make sure you make time for yourself.

So who’s ready to tackle the summer months with a new game plan? With a combination of laughter, creativity, and self-care, you’ll be able to confidently keep your kids in line—without fear of missing out!

Make a Joke, Do Fun Stuff and Go Barefoot in the Grass!

[TurnAround Thursday] No Pain, KNOW Gain

 30SecTA

Children Teach Us What We Need To Know

Hey there, Difference Maker!

Last week I told you all about my new amazing physical therapist and his approach to pain management. It turns out that the whole “no pain, no gain” mentality isn’t all it’s cracked up to be – who knew?

Instead, my PT uses something called Frequency-Specific Microcurrent to relieve pain using low levels of electrical currents. Crazy, right? But let me tell you, it’s been working wonders for me.

First, he hooks me up and runs the FSM frequency programs to dial-off the pain.

frequencies

Then, he uses his PT strategies to gently work my knees in ways they haven’t moved without pain or resistance in a long time.

Movement

And finally, he gives me exercises to practice at home that systematically build up my joints, muscles and tendons instead of traumatizing them further.

And you know what’s truly amazing? The results I’ve seen in just one month with him are FAR better than all my previous PT experiences combined.

It really makes you wonder why anyone still thinks the “no pain, no gain” method is a good idea!

But I’ve also gotta give you some advice as to how this all relates to dealing with kids – after all, that’s my area of expertise.

Similar to what my PT does to help me, here’s my ESP Method for you and any child in your care:

E is for ENERGY. Start by focusing on the child’s energy by getting to the heart of the problem to dial off the pain of struggle. Suspend all judgment in order to create a harmonious energy frequencies between you and the child. That way, you can move them in the right direction without inadvertently causing more resistance.

S is for STRATEGIES. Once you’ve harmonized with the child, now is the time to use effective and empowering strategies to can remedy upsets with collaborative skill development. This way, you can address the underlying issues instead of just treating symptoms.

And finally, P is for PRACTICE. Practice those new skills until they become second nature. Remember, the goal is to build children up, not tear them down.

So there you have it, friends. Say goodbye to “no pain, no gain” and hello to a kinder, gentler approach to life. Your spouse – and your kids – will thank you!

No Pain, Know Gain.

So, if you’ve been looking for a way to make parenting easier and less painful (for both you and your kids) … check out my 2nd Edition of Make A Difference with the Power of Connection FlipBook at: MaryReynolds.com/MDPC and learn more about ESP – it’s like a secret parenting weapon!

Children Teach Us What We Need To Know

Hey there, Difference Maker!

Last week I shared how thrilled I am with my new Physical Therapist’s approach with me as it is in alignment with how I’ve worked with children and adults for over forty years now.

How on my first visit, he explained how the “no pain, no gain” served absolutely zero restorative purpose in regenerating my knees.  That it originated with weight lifting and had only one specific purpose for that.

It was never meant to spill over into so many other areas in our lives, like how we use pain inducing tactics to teach behavioral lessons instead of teaching skills.

Give this a moment to sink in:  No Pain, Know Gain

Know Gain.

The reason why I went to him was because he was trained in Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM).

What is FSM?  It’s a way to relieve pain using very low levels of electrical current. This treatment option can be used on specific tissues in your body to help with pain caused by injuries or medical conditions. (Not the same as a TENS Unit.)

Similarly to how I work with adults who live with, love and work with children, he hooks me up and start running FSM frequency programs to dial off the pain first.

Next, as my knees are relaxing into specific healing vibrational frequencies, he is able to use his PT strategies to help my knees to move in ways that they have not been moving for some time.

Finally, he adds on one new exercise to my program I am to practice daily.  Exercises that build up my muscles and tendons, not traumatize them further.  I am to stop the second I feel the “burn” or any pain whatsoever.

Here’s the thing: The improvements I’m already making in my first month with him are far exceeding all the months of work I’ve done with two other PTs who used, not only the “no pain, no gain” method with me, but used the “push through the pain”  and keep going technique.

This is not childbirth.  This is supposed to be rebuilding not re-traumatizing.

My knees would blow up with inflammation afterwards, I’d ice and heat them, then go back and do it again.

Much the same way we treat kids who struggle with what they are being told to do.

Today’s children are teaching us what we need to know.

Here’s a good way to proceed:

Energy first.  To harmonize with the child, you’ve got to suspend all judgment which will shift the energy between the two of you so you can move them in the direction you want them to go without so much resistance.

Strategies second:

Practice third:

They are blowing past social norms because they literally can’t take the pain of anymore!

And so that’s today’s 30 Second TurnAround!

[TurnAround Thursday] So, Don’t Do It!

Children Teach Us What We Need To Know

Hey there, Difference Maker!

So, I’ve started to work with a new Physical Therapist and I’m pretty thrilled with his approach with me.

On my first visit, he explained how the “no pain, no gain” served absolutely zero restorative purpose in regenerating my knees.  That it originated with weight lifting and had only one specific purpose for that.  It was never meant to spill over into so many other areas in our lives.

The first thing he asks me when I arrive to my appointment is, “How are you feeling?”

When my knees are hurting more, he simply asks, “So, what do you think you did, that may be making them hurt more today?”

As I recap the choices I made previously, I usually hit on something I did that I knew not to do.  (Let me repeat, I did something I knew not to do!)

He then says to me, “So, don’t do that.”

Boom comic bang. Speech bubble bam. Cartoon explosion.

No lecture laced with an entitled “in your face” judgmental attitude, vibe and tone.

No, “Hit the ground and give me 100 push-ups!”

No BANGing the drum – doubling down hard – on what I did wrong that hurt me in order to hammer it into me further, so I’ll surely remember the next time not to do it again … because that always works with adults (and children)!  Right?

8

I discovered on Day One that I didn’t have to JREDD (a Mary-ism you are welcome to use) meaning to Justify, Rationalize, Explain, Defend or Debate.

I discovered that I don’t need to exhaustively analyze myself, my state of mind, and all of my reasons why I did it.

It’s as simple as, “Don’t do it!”

Here’s the thing: The improvements I’m already making in my first month with him are far exceeding all the months of work I’ve done with two other PTs who used the “no pain, no gain” method with me.

And so that’s today’s 30 Second TurnAround!

[TurnAround Thursday] Get a Kick-Butt Energy Boost

3 4 5

Hey there, Difference Maker!

Are you still feeling a deep pull inside yourself about making a difference in the world, but feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who slip through the cracks of our schools and communities?

Fear not, for I’ve got some research that will embolden you with a potent tool to help you on your quest — acknowledgment! Yes, acknowledgment is the key ingredient that can help you succeed even when things seem impossible. Read on to find out more.

For many, June means burn out.  But did you know that a simple altruistic act, like acknowledging someone (which can take 30 Seconds or less) can be a game changer?

r6

Today, I want to tell you about Dr. Martin Seligman who did an interesting experiment.

He brought two groups of students in his lab, the first group of students he asked them to do something enjoyable. Something that they liked to do.

The second group of students he asked him to do something altruistic for someone else.

Both groups got a momentary burst of pleasure.

However, the altruistic group felt better all day long.

In other words doing something enjoyable for yourself only lasts in the moment.

But doing something altruistic, like taking 30 Seconds to Acknowledge another human being, helps you feel better all day long.

But that’s not all, it also has a side benefit of making people feel more confident and assertive.

So don’t wait any longer, learn how to infuse your life with this powerful ingredient.

With just a 30 Second Acknowledgment of another, you can make a big difference in the world and get a kick-butt energy boost for yourself that can last all day long!!

[TurnAround Thursday] Need a breather? Grab a margarita …

3 4 5

Hey there, Difference Maker!

Are you feeling burnt out, fried like an egg on a hot sidewalk, or just plain exhausted? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

As educational leaders today, you’re expected to give your all to create positive change every day. But, let’s face it, you’re only human and you are so glad that the school year is all but over.

So, what should you do when you feel like you’ve hit a brick wall but still need to keep on keeping on?

First things first – take a breather! You’re not Wonder Woman or Superman, so don’t try to be. Grab a cup of coffee, tea, or maybe even a margarita (no judgment) and take a few deep breaths. You deserve a little self-care time. Trust me on this.

Next, don’t be afraid to delegate some tasks. As leaders, sometimes we feel like we need to do everything ourselves, but that’s not sustainable. Look around you and see who can support you. You’ll be surprised at how willing people are to assist you when they know just how much you appreciate them and acknowledge the difference that they’ve made in your life.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room – losing students through the cracks of our schools and communities. It’s tough, and there’s no one way to solve it. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make progress.

Think outside the box! Host an end-of-school-year Acknowledgment Assembly where students get an opportunity to acknowledge each other … and themselves.  It’s a great way to finish strong and set the stage for next year.

2

Finally, remember why you got into education in the first place. It’s not for the money or the fame (ha, as if!). It’s for the impact you can make on individual lives and your community as a whole.

So, take a moment to remember that feeling of joy and purpose and use it as motivation to keep going.

In conclusion, Difference Makers, don’t let burnout get the better of you. Take a break, delegate, get creative, and remember why you do what you do. You got this!
