Dear Difference Maker,

The last time I wrote, I did a B&B (Brag & Blab) about something I got to observe my son do in the face of a season-ending loss.  It was definitely a proud momma moment.  I have found that sharing is such a wonderful thing mostly because it encourages others to do the same.

Since that share, I’ve received so many B&Bs from you all.  It is absolutely thrilling to see so many successes coming in daily now, but even more so, is your willingness to step more fully into your greatness and just own it for the world to be uplifted and encouraged by.

Stop apologizing for your light: #1 Everybody has LIGHT and #2 there is enough LIGHT for everyone. By the same token, you don’t have to blind everybody with your light either!  Take it easy.  When you meet someone for the first time, do yourself and them a favor: start with a soft shine and work your way up to bright!

In my You Are The Light Movie there are two passages relevant to today’s message:

1-You do not need the world’s permission to shine Your Light upon the darkness.

2-You don’t have to warn the darkness that you are coming with the Light.

With that said, I’m ready to share how I discovered the magic of shining my light.

Nothing is anything until you call it. If you call whatever is happening in your life right now a success, you will be energized by the opportunity smack dab in front of you.

If you are reading this, I believe life is demanding that you be more, not do more. You were born with everything you need to be all that you can be and more. Your success is inherent.

I have always had a special magic when it comes to children of all ages. Adults too.

I thought it was because I was my parent’s “problem” child. I was a problem for them because, unlike my quiet, perfectly behaving older sister, I talked back to them when I didn’t like the hurtful, authoritarian tactics they used to “teach me a lesson” about almost everything I wanted to do as a child.

During my senior year of high school, I became aware that I had what I considered to be a certain magic, with every child I met, regardless of who they were or what they had been “labeled.” I inherently understood those labels because of my own label of always being a “problem” for my parents.

I had a tough time in school. During my junior year of college, I wanted to quit because it was so hard.

I was working nights as a waitress, and I’ll never forget that pivotal moment when the realization hit me that if I quit college this is what I’d be doing for the rest of my life.  I didn’t love it and I needed something with a lot of creative license to it.

I decided right then and there I would “sit on myself” and do whatever I had to do to graduate. Something changed inside of me. I claimed my success and decided to “act as if” I could, and so I did. I started enjoying accolades, and I eagerly let myself be driven by the success I felt I was accomplishing.

Then as a teacher, I essentially became a workaholic, which kept my mind busy and my days full. I made it a point to do everything “the right way,” and I overextended myself intentionally, so I could feed the drive in me to prove my parents wrong.

Then life threw me a curve ball …

In 1984, I lost my first child at birth. Three months after that I had a miscarriage. A year later, I had a high-risk pregnancy and premature birth. A year after our son was born, I divorced my husband. Another year after that, I moved to a new state, and when all of my job prospects and interviews fell through, I found myself as a single mother of a two-year-old. I was emotionally and physically burned out and literally living on pennies, alone in a huge new city where I knew no one.

My life hurt so bad, it felt like someone running their fingernails down a chalkboard of my soul.

Since college, I had worked hard to do everything the “right” way.

And now, here I was. With the precious exception of my wonderful son, I had somehow managed to get everything in life that I did not want!

What I discovered as I began the journey of reigniting the light within me was that …

LIFE WAS DEMANDING that I BE more, not expend more.

LIFE WAS DEMANDING that I take it upon myself to learn empowering skills to deal with every aspect of my life much more effectively, so I could simply be the success I was inherently designed to be.

Now I’m doing something I never imagined over four decades ago. I’m helping teachers and parents who have a big heart and want to be making a positive, healing difference, but who are having difficulty working with today’s challenging children, as well as helping adults and adolescents who are less effective than they want to be with difficult people and situations.

In short, I teach people how to peacefully turn around big, scary, emotionally intense situations that are becoming the new normal in today’s classrooms, homes and workplaces.

At the height of my burnout, while wondering what I was going to do next to support myself and my son, an educational consultant friend of mine asked me point blank, “What is it that you do best, Mary?”

Without skipping a beat I said, “I make magic with the kids nobody wants in their classrooms.”

To which she replied, “Good, but I don’t think magic will ever sell! What is it exactly that you do with students that other educators are not doing?  What is the magic?”

For the first time in my life, I felt my purpose coming up through me, filling up the hole in my soul. I immediately grabbed some paper and a pen, and my system literally wrote itself. It’s the same system I’ve applied to my life, my second marriage, and my blended family for the past 40 years. I still love teaching it today.

Teaching these skills is super important to me, because I’ve seen how much life sucks when you feel like you’ve tried so hard, and yet it “appears” that you are failing so big. It is frustrating when you have a message to share and you don’t know how to get connection and engagement with all of the noise and distractions of today’s world.

I’ve also seen how amazing life can be when you DO know how to use your energy, vibe and tone to get students and adults to be fully engaged with you every step of the way.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg …

I’m writing this today because I’ve been thinking about you and wondering if, after the past year, you are feeling burned out?

For now, I’d love to get your feedback on what I just shared with you. Do you have a similar personal experience you’d like to share, but you’re not sure where to start? Are you having a difficult time putting into words what’s de-energizing you most right now?

I’d love to know more about where you are on your journey right now.

Dear Difference Maker,

I think you will agree with me that there is nothing like SUCCESS to Reignite your Light.  Focusing on something that’s great about yourself and the things that you do best can instantly lift your spirits and bring you back to a beautiful, lit-up world.

When children would arrive each morning in my classroom, they would excitedly line up to tell me about some kind of cool thing that had happened for them since I saw them last.

It occurred to me one day that their wonderful success stories needed to be shared with everyone, so I decided to make it a “thing” and we started having Brag & Blab time.

We did two activities each morning to get our minds ready for learning.

 1) Journal about our feelings and preferences for the first 10-15 minutes.

2) Have Brag & Blab time in which anybody and everybody who had a success from the day before could come to the front of the room and share.

Initially, it was only the most outgoing students who ran up to grab the spotlight.  But it wasn’t long before every single student was engaged and empowered to share something – even the little stuff – from the front of the room.

I wanted kids to know that every single one of them was special in their own right and that there was enough greatness and success to go around for everyone.

If I were in the classroom today, I’d add a third activity with a mixture of dancing, yoga, tai chi, meditation and stating affirmations out loud to calm, rewire and ready their minds and accelerate learning.

You can learn more about the academic accelerant benefits of Brag & Blab in my 9 Weeks to a Safe, All-Inclusive Classroom for a Make A Difference Year Curriculum.

In the upcoming days ahead, we’re going to be looking at how simply owning our inner Success Power can Reignite our Lights.

BRAG & BLAB

A Proud Football Momma Moment came unexpectedly for me this past April at the last game of the COVID Spring High School Football Season.  My son, the head football coach (standing in the middle with his rain hat on) was having his after-game talk with his team.  They had just lost a gut-wrenching, nail-biter.

Everyone was initially downtrodden until he pulled out the YOU ARE A SUCCESS card and started telling them what winners they were as young men.  How proud he was of them for how they showed up and played from behind to almost win in the last second.  How they had left it all on the football field.  They never quit even though they’d been down 21 points at the half.

He talked about their character, their courage, their unity, and how THIS was what would shape their lives for the greater good.  Their ability to take defeat and make it about growth toward bigger and greater successful life to come.

He talked about how they were family. How thankful he was for their parents as part of this family within a family.

And as he did, I began to notice them wiping their eyes, sitting up straighter, starting to laugh at some of the funny remarks he made about them.  Then I noticed the parents wiping their eyes, standing up taller, smiling, laughing, and when he was done, everyone stood and cheered as if they had won the game.   I guess, they actually did.  The game of life.  I still get wet eyes thinking about this.

I know that you may have been through a soul-crushing time here in the last several years, maybe because of COVID, maybe because of life’s offerings.  But today, I just want you to remember that …

Nothing is anything until you call it. If you call whatever is happening in your life right now a success, you will be energized by the opportunity smack dab in front of you.

I’d love to know your Brag & Blab.

Reach for it and then click here to share it with me.  Send me as many as you can think of.  I want to know.

Hey there Difference Maker,

How are you doing? It’s been quite a year and a half, and I’m really looking forward to catching up with you?

Since I connected with you last, I’ve been talking with people of all ages and backgrounds who have given it their all through the pandemic and now feel they are in a place of burnout.

Because of this, I’ve been busy going through the books I’ve written to try to find the right words of encouragement to offer, just in case your “get up and go – got up and went.”

In searching through my material, the message in my very first book, You Are A Success! seemed to be a perfect place to re-connect with you.

What is that saying? “Everything old is new again!”  Well, that’s where we are today, it seems.

Speaking of NEW: I’ve also been researching the newest, latest, greatest delivery systems for my online programs, and I have found a software program that turns my book into an online FlipBook … It is the coolest thing ever!

You’ve been a supporter of mine for a long time,
so I’m excited to give it to you for free!

I originally decided to write this book as a single mother living on a wing and a prayer, when I realized that I had incorporated exactly 61 bite-size strategies for reigniting the light in my life.

I had just made it through a particularly dark period
when my life felt like someone
running their fingernails down the blackboard of my soul.

One day, after my life had stabilized, I unexpectedly found myself writing a book about the 61 Success Strategies. They have consistently lifted me up all these years. Seeing so many people struggling with burnout and overwhelm these past months brought me back to that time in my life, when I too was in a place of exhaustion and divine discontent.

Out of all of my books, this is the one that I want to give you. I feel it’s a great place for us to begin again.

To re-purpose our purpose so to speak.  It’s my “welcome to my new website” gift to you and yours as life is about releasing the past and the future to focus all of our attention on the here and now.

CMS SPRINT #1d: Don’t have time? or Don’t have time not to!

To learn more: MaryReynolds/Wristbands

Dear Difference Maker,

A lot of folks think they don’t have time to learn better ways to deal with the social emotional aspects of unproductive behaviors.  But actually, there’s some new thinking on that.

Here’s why I say that …

People believe they don’t have time for social-emotional problem solving because:

  •      They are juggling too many plates as it is, so they are somehow exempt from learning a better way to be empowering to others (which will have a long-term effect – i.e., teach them how to fish!)

I was right there with them. In fact, here’s what I used to believe and why:

  •      In my first year of teaching, I accepted a job where the students had gotten the teacher before me fired. It was a rural school with grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 in one classroom. Talk about not having enough time! Four lesson plans a week in every single subject, plus p.e., music, art and recess.  The previous teacher’s “go to” methods were punishing, policing and punitive, which clearly had not worked out for her.  However, out of fear, I began by following in her footsteps.

Let me share with you why I don’t think that way anymore:

  •      One day, I had a moment of clarity. I heard my mother’s authoritarian, entitled and condescending rant coming out of my mouth at a behaviorally disruptive group of students. The shock of hearing myself stopped me mid-sentence. I had promised myself at the age of 17, during one of her full-on demoralizing rants, that I would never speak to any child the way she spoke to me.

Ultimately, I realized that, when you are faced with an old, worn-out way of doing things that only causes harm to others and yourself, you must make time to learn and/or do something different to change the result.

Here’s how things have changed:

  •      Rather than saying to myself – as many do – “Verbal and physical abuse worked on me and I turned out OK!” – make time right here, right now to find a better way, as I did.

From that day forward, when dealing with unskillful behaviors, I asked myself:  “How would I have loved to have been treated growing up, when I was messing up?”

That day, it took all of 30 seconds for me to know exactly what I needed to do differently to get this group of unfiltered kids turned around behaviorally and academically.

I started building a team “one for all, all for one” mindset with them.

Years later, I took this Team Synergy training to audiences around the country as a Educational and Corporate trainer for National Seminars Group.

What this can mean for you is that when you are working with an unruly, unfiltered, unhappy group of students or colleagues, make the time to learn about and then apply the synergistic power of team building now offered in my UTrain Team Synergy Program with 9 – 30 minute unifying conversations starters and activities.

Don’t have time not to!

According to the Institute of HeartMath, it takes between 1-5 hours after an emotional upset for the body to restore its homeostasis of the heart and nervous systems.

Of course, it could be more than 5 hours depending on whether we ruminate for hours and hours, or learn how asking unifying questions can open people’s hearts and minds toward each other.

Remember this:

When an outburst occurs, met by fight, flight, flee or flip out responses, every person in the environment loses the next 1-5 hours of concentration and productivity.

Wouldn’t it be better to concentrate on making time to build socially safe relationships as the way to avoid or minimize the outburst altogether through team building?

If you only teach the kids having a hard time, you miss teaching the class.
If you ignore the kids having a hard time and teach the class,
you lose struggling kids through the cracks.
Whatcha gotta do is teach ALL the kids how to treat the one kid
who is most likely only hanging on by a thread.

BREAKER LINE

Dear Difference Maker,

Let me tell you a story about a de-energized difference maker named Riley …

She’s a leader in education, but this story is no different for a leader in corporate, non-profit or any other organization.

Riley is a leader who dreams of becoming skilled at re-energizing and synergizing people within her circle of influence, without a lot of rah-rah or having to be the Energizer Bunny all day every day!

Currently, Riley’s focus is on becoming confident and elegant in navigating uncomfortable yet necessary conversations.

She wants to be able to align her colleagues by finding something fun, simple and easy to do over time that is self-sustaining in re-boosting fatigued hearts, minds and spirits.

Ultimately, Riley really wants to be compassionate and understanding in order to be genuinely supportive.

Right this minute, Riley would be ecstatic if she could unite people through the practice of acknowledging and listening to each other’s points-of-views.

Unfortunately, Riley still needs to figure out how to re-ignite those who show up and do their work every day but have checked-out emotionally and energetically.

Riley is also really frustrated by the fact that colleagues, faculty, staff and students seem so disengaged and distracted by things they can’t control instead of focusing on what they can do right here, right now.

Plus, she still needs the answer to this question before she can move forward:

“How do I re-energize very disgruntled people with effortless confidence and ease?”

Riley is also hung up on the idea that all her efforts to make a difference are landing on eyes that won’t see and ears that won’t hear.

In fact, when it comes to finding something fun, simple and easy to do that is self-sustaining in re-boosting fatigued hearts, minds and spirits, she is convinced that it’s just too hard.  That there is just so much resistance to learning how to talk so people will listen, that many in her group actually want her to BUZZ OFF!

When all is said and done, Riley just wants to be able to walk up to an unhappy, discombobulated person and engage them in a life lifting conversation that others on her team will model and emulate as well.

To help anyone like Riley, I would invite everyone to check out my 9 Week Team Synergy Training that I’m offering at 25% Savings right now PLUS 25 FREE I Make A Difference Wristbands (FREE Shipping), so anyone can feel seen, heard and felt every time they want to be.

What makes this even better?

Dear Difference Maker,

As everything is magnifying in the world, one might think it’s impossible to make a difference in any meaningful, self-sustaining way.
Have you ever read a particular poem, heard a certain quote, or a short story, and the message just grabbed you right in the heart at just the right time?
I’d like to share one of my favorite stories with you today.
The Star Thrower
Inspired by the writing of Loren Eiseley
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a figure in the distance. As he got closer, he realized the figure was that of a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and thousands of starfish? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the surf.

Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”
012
This story reminds us that we can make a difference.  That it’s as simple as the power of ONE.
ONE moment at a time.
ONE person at a time.
ONE day at a time.
Always remember how one small act of acknowledgment can have a life changing impact …

If you’d like to go to the next level and be able to unify a group of de-energized, disengaged, disgruntled individuals to build a socially safe community to work and thrive in, then I have Great News: the heavy lifting has been done for you.

All you need to do with my program is 1) PRESS PLAY, 2) ask the unifying questions provided to help people find common ground, and 3) listen intently on each person’s response so you will demonstrate how to understand more compassionately.

CMS SPRINT #1a: Students who had gotten the teacher before me fired!

To learn more: MaryReynolds/Wristbands

BREAKER LINE

Dear Difference Maker,

Let me tell you a story about the time I signed on to teach a group of students who got their previous teacher fired!

It was my first year of teaching in a rural school out in the middle of nowhere!  I accepted a job to teach grades 3,4,5 and 6 of students who were behaviorally unfiltered and had acclimated toward hourly disruption and chaos.

I was offered the job because of the excellent discipline I had demonstrated during my student teaching internship.

Here’s what happened right out of the starting gate:

  • I had to write lesson plans for all four grade levels in every single subject area, plus provide daily activities for teaching music and art.
  • Because there were no aides to help, I never got a break from the moment I opened the doors to when I left for the day.  Not even recess.
  • I was correcting papers until midnight and then getting up at 5 a.m. to do it all over again.
  • I was having nightmares almost every night in anticipation in managing this group of behaviorally scary students.

Then one evening driving home from school, I had a realization that I was never going to make it at this pace.

I needed a solution!

My #1 life motto had always been:  If it’s not fun, I’m not doing it!

So I started thinking about what I could do differently to make teaching this unruly group of students easy and fun, yet contained!

I began contemplating what teachers did in the good old days when they had all twelve grade levels in one room … and because I shifted my focus off “the problem, the problem, the problem” that’s when it happened!  A creative solution emerged.

I had a visual in my mind that teachers in one-room schoolhouses must have teamed students up to learn together.

The next day, that’s exactly what I did.  I started teaming my students up in a variety of creative ways, each and every day.

To put an end to the cliques, we drew random numbers many times throughout the day so no team was exactly the same from subject to subject, day after day.

Of course problems popped up and so we Teamed Up to have constructive, unifying conversations to find solutions – together – as a team.  I invited them into two-way conversations to get to the heart of what was going on.

Here’s what happened:

Every. Single. Student. started learning better and having more fun and I wasn’t staying up until midnight grading papers anymore because we did it in teams.

Here’s what I learned from this:

  1. Focusing on the new, fun solutions brings creative ideas. This goes for a teacher’s resolve to manage their time as well as student behaviors.
  1. By immediately implementing the Teaming Up ideas I envisioned, not only did I survive my first year, but my students also thrived.
  1. BONUS:  as a unified community of caring individuals emerged, the unproductive behaviors of the past completely dissolved, and their productivity accelerated from teaming up to learn with each other.

This is important because:

Rather than staying stuck in old-worn out ways of doing things, allow yourself to get creative.  Think easy and fun.  Think unity.

The moral of this story is multi-faceted:

1-     better solutions come from reaching for better feeling thoughts,
2-     team synergy really does make the dream work,
3-     and maybe most importantly, many hands do make light work.

Here’s how you can use this step by step:

Step 1:  List off 5 ways you can use my 9 Unifying Conversations and Activities to Create Cohesive, Engaged, High-Performing Teams that will help you win back time while making a difference in the lives of others … no matter what the age!

Step 2:  Even simpler, just think about how much work you can be getting done when you are able to guide struggling individuals in how to talk so that they can be seen, heard and felt within the context of a synergistic community of their peers.

After all, we’re all just little kids in big bodies striving to get along!

If you’d like to go to the next level and be able to unify a group of de-energized, disengaged, disgruntled individuals to build a socially safe community to work in, then I have Great News: the heavy lifting has been done for you.

All you need to do with my program is 1) PRESS PLAY, 2) ask the questions provided to help people find common ground and 3) listen intently on each person’s response so you will demonstrate how to understand more compassionately.
