Dear DM 1

In thinking Exponential, Acting Local and Reaching Globally what comes to mind is the concept of 6 Degrees of Separation which is the theory that everyone and everything is six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world, so that a chain of “a friend of a friend” statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps. It was originally set out by Frigyes Karinthy and popularized by a play written by John Guare.

Here’s a cool diagram by Laurens van Lieshout of what 6 Degrees of Separation begins to look like and then multiply it X 1000 just for the fun of it!

Six_degrees_of_separation

When I think of ‘I Make A Difference’ Wristbands and/or Stickers, I think of how many people’s lives we each can enrich with a just little grace and ease…

For an investment of just $20 you receive 25 ‘I Make A Difference’ Wristbands, and by Acknowledging just 6 people and giving them 4 Wristband each, you end up positively impacting 24 people, and you get to keep one! And because they were Acknowledged, now multiply that …

For $65 you get 100 ‘I Make A Difference’ Wristbands, and by Acknowledging just 25 people within your circle of influence, you end up positively impacting 100 people … all because you took 30 seconds to appreciate and Acknowledge someone who made a difference in your life. Now multiply that!

But let’s not stop there…

For $75 you receive 1000 ‘I Make A Difference’ Stickers, and by Acknowledging each person with 5 stickers to carry forward (they come in sheets of 5 per sheet) you end up positively impacting 1000 people within your circle of influence! Now multiply that!

Not bad for 30 seconds to Acknowledgment each and every time serendipity, synchronicity and those uncanny coincidences occur right in front of you!

Let’s take it even further still…

Invest in my Make A Difference with the Power of Acknowledgment UTrain® Program and receive an 85% SAVINGS on up to 1400 ‘I Make A Difference’ Wristbands and your UTrain Program pays for itself!

2a

If just 350 people are Acknowledged and given 4 ‘I Make A Difference’ Wristbands, each can REACH OUT and Acknowledge a total of 1400 people!! Now multiply that!

That’s 1400 people who have been positively impacted, and as we all know … People who feel good, do good.

Your ‘I Make A Difference’ Wristbands and Stickers come with the 3 Steps to recognizing some one with your Acknowledgment (automatically delivered electronically,) and they are amazingly easy to remember and do.

Speaking of Acknowledging others, now it’s my turn …

There is no better time than this fall to dive into Make A Difference with the Power of Acknowledgment UTrain® Program!”

We know that the AcknowledgmentMovie.com and it’s companion Ceremony has an immediate transformational impact on the lives of all those in attendance, but what happens afterwards?

Make A Difference with the Power of Acknowledgment UTrain® Program not only sustains – it extends the momentum generated from the emotional impact of the “Who I Am Makes A Difference” story/movie and Acknowledgment Ceremony into weeks, months and yes, even years.

Managers, supervisors, directors, business owners, superintendents, principals, and ministers alike have asked me how they can extend the positive feelings of the Acknowledgment Recognition they’ve just experienced.

That’s why I created Make A Difference with the Power of Acknowledgment  UTrain® Program to keep the Act of Acknowledgment growing and expanding in YOUR successive in‑services and other fall and winter training events.

Dear Difference Maker,

I don’t know about you but never asked my kids if they wanted to brush their teeth. I directed them to just do it when it was time to get ready for bed and they did it.

When I first started my own business over twenty-five years ago I did not apply the same directives with my employees.  Having worked with thousands of other people’s children I was passionate about calling out the best in them. With adults I had a mental block.  I was surprised at how I did not seem to be able to simply lead and create team synergy like I had when I was a winning championships as a volleyball and basketball coach.

I was much more concerned with their buy in than the greater vision I was intending to build with them.

When I’d invested everything I had financially to get my endeavor off the ground and had not succeeded at being able to support myself or my young son as a single mother, I started bridging what I already knew to do with children with the adults working along side of me.

That’s when things changed for the better.  There are just times when you take charge and direct people and there are times when you encourage them to brainstorm and participate in the direction you will all be taking together.

Whether it be in Education, Business, Organization or Church leadership I’ve coached many administrative leaders over the years and the one area where many of them miss the mark of what’s truly possible is being fearful of what certain people’s unfiltered responses might be.

That instead of making the decision to go forward with what they know will be best and just do it as the Nike slogan says, they acquiesce.

cute-squirrel-at-the-coast-of-california-picture-id901304438 Rainer Puster.

Heading up a program that can save lives takes a decisive mind because there will be those who say, “There just isn’t time to learn how to deal effectively with the social emotional issues creating violence in our schools and places of work!”

Here we are.  Another fall and winter season ahead.  As you well know, things are reaching an epic proportion: violence, drug addiction, suicide etc.  Hurting others and ourselves all because we are not hammering the fundamentals of creating deep, meaningful and emotionally uplifting connections within our communities.

I understand that there are those who fear that a DAY, WEEK, MONTH or YEAR long program will be overwhelming. As an educator and business woman I can tell you that this is exactly why I designed Make A Difference with the Power of Acknowledgment UTrain Program the way that I did.

It is an extremely flexible program with a simple system that you can bring to your people one of many ways for your theme:

Make A Difference DAY
Make A Difference WEEK
Make A Difference MONTH
Make A Difference YEAR

Now, you can take my ideas and create your own program which will cost you a lot of time and energy that you could be putting toward the other demands coming at you at this time of year OR you can grab a cup of coffee, sit back and relax.  I’ve got this covered.  I’ve done all of the heavy lifting for you.

The message has never been more clear …

First, if you need a lift in your day, get out there and acknowledge someone.

Second, if you need job security, advancement, money and credibility as your motivator, get out there and acknowledge someone and make it your daily practice and you’ll get more of what you want in life and less of what you don’t!

Using the Power of Acknowledgment Increases Your Bottom Line
Excerpt from Make A Difference with the Power of Acknowledgment UTRAIN™ Program

Core Values, your “reason for being,” will determine your success in life and in business. To help you or your organization reinforce what’s most important, and to show that you care, begin with the simple act of acknowledgment site-wide. It will have a continuous exponential ripple effect!

Acknowledgment makes more money!

According to Professor Daniel Goleman, who conducted research on how emotions affect the workplace for his book Primal Leadership, there is a direct correlation between employee morale and the bottom line.

One study found that every 2 percent increase in the “service climate” -that is, the general cheerfulness and helpfulness of the staff – saw a 1 percent increase in revenue.

To the small or large organization:  Real leadership begins on the inside with your own commitment to inspire the best in others and be the difference you want to make in your lifetime.

Cooperative Leading is a philosophy – an attitude – that will work wonders for anyone in any type of leadership role.

Emerson said it best, “It’s one of the most beautiful compensations in life that no person can help another without helping themselves.”

For every 2 percent increase in the “service climate” – that is, the general cheerfulness and helpfulness of the staff – you get a 1 percent increase in revenue.

Do the math to determine how much of an increase in “service climate” it will take to increase your revenue as much as you may need right now.

There is a current Top 10 List of Organizations that are Growing and Hiring in the midst of the economy shift, one of which is Dreyer’s, a $2 billion company with more than 6,000 employees. It just keeps on growing because of their …”I Can Make A Difference” Work Environment.

JUST IMAGINE what this will do for your office and work-place culture, not to mention what it teaches people about a great way to LIVE and succeed in this world.

It was Brian Tracy who once said… “We are the CEO‘s of our own service organization”… meaning that we and we alone decide who we are going to give our services to for pay.

Victim mentality is pretty much about believing more in our weaknesses than we do in our strengths, which has everything to do with how we show up for our work.

Maybe we are doing work that is merely paying the bills, but hey, if it’s paying the bills it’s paying the bills.

0c0807643f1efc4a4da22fcda12336f7

If you feel you have a purpose and passion that extends beyond what you are currently doing, the fastest way to getting on to that next playing field is to make sure you are leaving the place you are currently working at better than when you first came.

You can do that by reaching out to each and every person in your organization – ESPECIALLY – the personnel you don’t like, who rub you the wrong way, who are irritating, difficult and start connecting, acknowledging and making a difference right there!

Dig deep inside yourself; put yourself in their shoes and start acknowledging them as authentically as you possibly can, ONE thing that you can recognize as their gift and/or talent.

I have found that each and every time I was in a work situation that I was ready to advance out of, that I had made it a goal of reaching out to connect with each and every person in a helpful way. A daily goal and that daily goal accumulated to amazing good for my professional path and I am certain it will yours … if you will just do it!

The other day, I Googled “Serendipity, Synchronicity” to see what I could find that had been written about it, as it is one of the subjects I love to ponder when it comes to being present enough to notice what’s going on “right in front of me” when I’m traveling out and about in the world.

I found a really great article by Artist Starlark, Jeanne Lloyd which I will share just an excerpt of for you today. She writes …

Synchronicity – Serendipity – Intuition

The uncanny coincidence. The unlikely conjunction of events. The startling serendipity.

Who hasn’t had it happen in their life?

You think of someone for the first time in years, and run into them a few hours later.

An unusual phrase you’d never heard before jumps out at you three times in the same day.

On a back street in a foreign country, you bump into a college roommate.

A book falls off the shelf at the bookstore, and it’s exactly what you need.

Is it only, as skeptics suggest, selective perception and the law of averages playing itself out?

Or is it, as Carl Jung believed, a glimpse into the underlying order of the universe? He coined the term synchronicity to describe what he called the “acausal connecting principle” that links mind and matter. He said this underlying connectedness manifests itself through meaningful coincidences that cannot be explained by cause and effect.

Such synchronicities occur, he theorized, when a strong need arises in the psyche of an individual. He described three types that he had observed: the coinciding of a thought or feeling with an outside event; a dream, vision or premonition of something that then happens in the future; and a dream or vision that coincides with an event occurring at a distance.

No one has come up with a definition that has superceded his, although there has been debate on whether events linked to precognition and clairvoyance should be included as synchronicity.

“There’s something about turning one’s choices over to intuition that seems to avail oneself to synchronicity,” says Allan Combs, Ph.D., a psychology professor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville who co-authored Synchronicity: Science, Myth and the Trickster (Marlowe). “In practice, that can mean moving from moment to moment when making decisions, even small decisions — especially small decisions! If you expect the unexpected, synchronicity will emerge.”

So what does Serendipity, Synchronicity and uncanny Coincidences have to do with you? Just about everything …

Today is a great time to visit with you about the inconsequential TIME FACTOR involved in noticing when there is someone next or near to you that you could reach out and positively impact with even just a little bit of Acknowledgment!

I will admit that I am a big HGTV and DIY – Do-It-Yourself – TV junkie!  I even prefer the commercials that they run for these programs better than other TV shows because they are all about making things better.  I love seeing all of the BEFOREs and AFTERs.  It encourages others to do the same.

This is true of making any place you live, work and play in better than you found it. I can attest to that wonderful feeling of fulfillment you get from helping people feel better and not waiting on any one else to make things better by just going ahead and doing it yourself.

if it is to be

Maybe it’s because I was a farmer’s daughter who was involved in 4-H and raising our own farm animals, growing our own crops and sewing my own clothes that I have an entrepreneurial spirit.

After I graduated from college my first job teaching was in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 in a rural school with a full classroom of 26 students.  Once a week I’d write four sets of lesson plans in every subject included PE and music.  I had no coffee breaks because I was also responsible for recess duty and the school’s Christmas musical each December.  If something needed to be done, I did it!

After two years I got a job in a regular school with just one grade level per teacher. I brought that entrepreneurial spirit into my new school and it not only served me well, it’s the number one reason why I intentionally created a strong community ethic.  I knew just how important it was for my students social and emotionally well being to experience a safe place to be who they were so they could all achieve academic success.

Upon arriving at my new school, I quickly set up Independent Learning systems for the students because I wanted them to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and take charge of their learning and their time.

What I didn’t know was what an impact this would make on their academic success. I also didn’t realize the impact it would make on the other teachers view of my students having fun learning in my classroom.

The Superintendent called me into his office in the spring of my third year there and told me in no uncertain terms that if my students did not do well on the Stanford Achievement Test scores, I would be fired. That several other teachers did not think I was doing a good job because my students were up out of their seats all the time and having fun.  That I was setting a poor example for the students in their classrooms because their students all wanted to be in my classroom!

When the test results came in I was very pleased and then I drew up a comparison chart on the teachers’ classrooms who were doing all of the complaining about me. My sixth grade students had lost 1-2 years of growth while being in their fourth and fifth grade classrooms while they gained an average of 2.5-3 years of growth during the year they were in my classroom.

In all my years of teaching with 55-65% youth who were highly at-risk of failing coming into my classrooms year after year, I never sent one student to the Principal’s office.

Later, when I started my own speaking, coaching and training business I started working with other business owners and leadership teams in corporations.  I applied the same strategies woven into an entrepreneurial mindset that I’d given to my students.

We’re all just little kids in big bodies after all and whether we are in a living or work environment, people just want to feel safe in their human interactions with one another.  When the importance of this is not being demonstrated and taught on a daily basis, things can build up and if not addressed can certainly become volatile.

Make It Better with my UTrain (MDPA) Make A Difference with the Power of Acknowledgment Program.  It is designed to reach out to our community and encourage affirmative involvement in our place of work, organizations, churches and with our schools so that together we will help kids and families who are hurting themselves and others through violence, drugs, alcohol and suicide.

MDPA can provide an additional boost to intervention programs you currently have in place.

As you know, for our living and working communities to be safe, our peers to be productive and our kids to excel academically we need to Make It Better for every one; individually and collectively.

By implementing Make A Difference (Day, Week, Month or Year) Theme you can lift every one up and out of hurtful bullying, gossip, prejudice, backstabbing, jealousy, labeling, defiance, belligerence, emotional and psychological escape through drugs, alcohol, food and electronics.  We must start NEW conversations that bring people together rather than divide us deeper.

This NEW conversation can begin with the inspirational movies I’ve brought into my MDPA program, followed with a series of thought-provoking questions designed to engage individuals with each other and their team leader to discuss the concepts of the story represented in the movie.

As adults, we need to learn how to listen to what each other has to say about how they feel and think even if their “truth” or point-of-view makes us uncomfortable. To be able to listen and hear what’s really being felt and said, peer-to-peer, it can be as simple as slowing down and continuing to ask questions until each point-of-view has been expressed and/or vented.

MDPA is structured so that individuals who get jumpy when things get emotional can stay with the questions provided and simply let a each person share their feelings and thoughts …and keep it SAFE for them to do so.

MDPA sets the theme for that day’s In-Service to demonstrate how to express thoughts and feelings in a way that keeps them coming back to their most AUTHENTIC selves. This is where self-esteem begins and academic achievement percentages improve significantly.

Dear DM 1

I’m going to be straight with you today about what really needs to happen to make things better and make it happen now.

The stories in this week’s blog beautifully illustrate how anyone can make a positive difference that has an exponential reach and it only requires something as simple as a preference. What if there really is a field-tested way that makes intense situations completely dissipate quickly and easily… would you use it?

It’s my hope you are intrigued enough to take a hot second to find out!

Make It Happen Now: Acknowledgment Works!
Excerpt from Make A Difference Power of Acknowledgment UTrain Curriculum

Recently I spoke at an association who is at the forefront of creating and sustaining innovative and intellectually challenging organizations.

But before I get into what happened, let me preface this by saying that I’ve traveled the country speaking to over 20,000 people in a two year period.  I received evaluations at the end of every day and so I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback over the years about my audience engagement.

I’m not telling you this to impress you but to give you a frame of reference about what I am going to share.   Advanced as we are technologically we are still inclined to approach the problematic areas in our places of work today from a place of waiting on someone else to fix it.  The #1 issue being the social-emotional problems that need to be, must be, solved beginning with the adults in charge – that is if you want to see productivity go up.

Back to my experience with an organization whose mission statement is to be the forefront of innovative change.

I opened with one of my most engaging activities to get audience involvement right away. It is something I do deliberately to get a feel for what they already know so I don’t take them down a road they’ve already traveled.

As an professional development trainer, I always have a Plan A, B, C etc. depending on what an audience reveals about themselves within the first 10 minutes of our time together.

This activity is designed to get people to think beyond their current situations into the future they’d like to find long term solutions for.   In fact Step 2 of this process is to identify “How they’s prefer that it be” within each of the problematic areas they’ve already identified in Step 1.

When we got to this question, “How would you prefer that it be?” it was like looking at deer in the headlight.  No one raised their hand with a preference.  I encouraged them to reach for it in their minds.  I instructed them to think beyond what they thought was possible or realistic and get to the heart of what they’d really like to see happen in education.

Tick-tock-tick-tock.  Nothing.
