Today’s TurnAround is … We Teach People How To Treat Us

This is a powerful reminder that we hold the key to how we are treated by others.

Just like a mirror reflects our own image, we teach people how to treat us. It’s a simple concept, yet holds a tremendous impact on our lives, especially when it comes to our relationships with children.

Imagine this scenario: a child, yearning for guidance and respect, is met with a lack of positive regard from their caregiver.

It is incongruous to demand respect from a child when we ourselves fail to show them the same respect.

It’s like pushing a vulnerable soul to the ground, placing our foot on their shoulder, and yelling, “Get Up!”

Instead, let us embrace a more compassionate approach and give children the respect they deserve. By doing so, we pave the way for a reciprocal relationship built on mutual understanding and trust.

Did you know that children’s IQs are already highly developed by the tender age of two?  By engaging children compassionate curiosity, regardless of their age, we can empower them to reach for the heart of the problem;  to start putting words to their thoughts first and emotions over time.

Rather than resorting to disruptive or negative behavior, little by little they can learn to speak their truth – truth to power – about their feelings in a constructive manner.  This works for adults too.  Thoughts first, feelings second.

This open line of communication fosters emotional intelligence and allows for healthier, more nurturing relationships with children.

FOR THE FUN OF IT:  So if it IS true that we teach people how to treat us, the next time you are ready to give someone a big “what for” about an obvious poor choice in behavior, STOP yourself and remember that the reaction you are about to give them is actually teaching them how to treat you in return, one day.

Hey there Difference Maker!

Today’s TurnAround – B-Mod Yourself –  revolves around a discovery I made when taking a Behavioral Modification class in my master’s program.  It is then that I discovered a fundamental principle of Behavior Modification that seems to get missed:

Before you can change anyone else, you must first change yourself.

So, you create a chart for a kid to either praise or punish behavior.

You are the one making the chart.  You are the one planning this out where you hadn’t before.

Who changed?   You did.

While you were making this chart, you started to hold a different expectation – i.e., attitude – toward the child believing this would be the way to get them under control.

Who changed first?  You did.

This is a concept that holds great significance, as our attitudinal vibes and tones play a pivotal role in shaping the outcomes of our interactions with others.

In fact, you’ll find that attitudinal vibes and tones cannot be concealed; it is a force that either contaminates or contributes to the outcomes we seek.  

You can’t have an attitude and keep it a secret!
… and please quote me on this.

What!?  We’re starting with you and not them?  Correct.   

2 Things can be true at the same time:

1- You are right: you are not responsible for the mental and emotional shape they are in when they come to school.  

2- You have the energetic power to BE a safe haven for them to shift emotional gears the second they walk through your classroom door based on your attitudes, vibes and tone.

Our tone of voice, the language we use and the expectations we set all manifest our underlying attitude towards them.

By checking in with yourself first – your true feelings about a kid – what’s really going on for you about “certain” students – we can then and only then energetically influence behaviors in ways we never thought possible.

To witness an immediate improvement in behaviors, the key lies in changing your attitude first.

Shedding fear, judgments, entitlement, prejudices and condescending life-limiting labels is the catalyst for the shift in energy between you and the child. By doing so, you open up a pathway for healing unproductive behaviors and witnessing remarkable results beyond your expectations.

As Richard Moss wisely said, “The greatest gift you can give another is the purity of your attention.” But let me tell you, it goes beyond just acknowledging someone’s presence; it’s about harnessing the energy within that connection.

We often underestimate the transformative effect that true attention can have.

It has the power to bring about positive behavioral changes in an instant. Whether it be at home or in the classroom, how we choose to give our attention can make all the difference in how children thrive.

When we consistently offer attention in a compassionate and affirming manner, it becomes a conscious act that can bring deep healing and growth to a child’s life.

To truly connect with others, we must be emotionally available and willing to slow down. This alignment of energies generates long-term solutions and fosters harmony, not only with children but with individuals of all ages.

By consciously choosing how we give our attention, we can build trust, strengthen relationships and truly make a difference.
