Observe Yourself 

I came up with this TurnAround in my 3rd year of teaching when I started a new job at my dream school.  It just so happened that my classroom had a wall of windows on two sides of the room.  One open to the outdoors and the other one open to the school hallway.  I loved that room because it was so light and bright.

One day when I heard myself launch into default adulting – going off on a kid like my parents had done with me – suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw someone in hallway looking into my classroom.

In that moment, I saw myself through their eyes.  And let me tell you, I did not like what I saw myself doing.

Ruh-Roh

In an instant – a literal instant – I course-corrected and took the conversation with that student in an entirely new, and much better, direction.

It’s not that we don’t know how to be compassionately curious when someone does something irritating, disrespectful, hurtful, harmful or exactly the opposite of what we’ve asked them to do, because we all know how. 

It’s that sometimes we’ve allowed ourselves to get to our last nerve and it’s at those moments our default adulting setting takes over and we sound like a broken record from the past!  

FOR THE FUN OF IT:  The next time someone gets on your last nerve mentally observe yourself.  What is is like being with you right now?  I challenge you to apply the power of self-observation and witness the remarkable direction changing impact it can have on diffusing the entire situation.

And whatever you do, don’t let yourself JREDD!  Justify, Rationalize, Explain, Defend or Debate your way out of how you were just default adulting.

In other words, stop blaming, deflecting, projecting and start claiming.  Own it.  If you were being less than great, who do you want to be instead?

Hey there Difference Maker!

Today’s TurnAround is … Change Your Default Adulting Settings

Two things can be true at the same time:
1) you can be doing everything you can to help make things better and …
2) you can be inadvertently hurting, limiting and trying too hard instead of helping.

What is “default adulting”?

It’s a term that I came up with – at least I think I was the one who came up with this  – to refer to well intentioned parenting and teaching styles that inadvertently hurt rather than teach skills.

It’s a way for me to talk about parenting and teaching, i.e., “adulting” styles that cover the full spectrum of possible styles, from authoritarian to authoritative to permissive to indulgent only without using that language.

Why not just use that language?

Because 1) it’s not a black-and-white thing, and 2) people often start to JREDD (Justify, Rationalize, Explain, Defend and Debate) and when defenses come up learning receptivity goes down.

Default adulting can be anything that floods out of your mouth with no end in sight.

Default adulting can be automatically yelling NO to something a kid is asking for because that’s what you got told when you asked for things that mattered to you.

Default adulting may have worked short term, but has never actually worked (long term), never will work (long term) and doubling down and trying harder at it only defeats everything you are trying to accomplish if pain is used to teach rather than teaching skills in an energetically encouraging way.

Default adulting most likely originates from what you learned to do from the adults in your world growing up.

If you hear yourself think, “Well, it worked on me and I turned out alright” then chances are, even though you hated it as a kid, you are afraid that if you don’t use it in tough situations, you will either lose control or not be doing your job to teach the children in your care.

It’s a simple litmus test:  If you hated how you were taught and treated as a kid, simply be willing to be willing to find, and use better ways.  Stop JREDDing.

What you can do to start changing your default adult setting is to investigate, “Is there a better way?”  Chances are, there is.

It can be as simple as asking yourself if you would talk to your best friend the way you are talking to the child or spouse right now.

FOR THE FUN OF IT:  The next time you hear yourself saying something that you always hated being said to you as a kid, STOP YOURSELF RIGHT THERE!  Make a mental note of this moment.

Take a breath.  You are most likely default adulting.  Chances are you are banging the drum about everything you do not want when, with one little shift, you can switch it up to how you’d prefer that it be … next time.

So how to you Change Default Adulting Settings?

Be willing to be willing to collaborate.  Talk about both of your preferences and see where that takes you toward problem solving and creating a new plan.

I’m not gonna lie.  It’s a process that begins with stopping yourself mid-sentence when you hear yourself doing it.

Slow everything down.  You don’t have to know what to do in that moment.  Give yourself and them an hour or more to find a better way.

If this were your best friend, what could you do differently?  Most likely it will be a better way.

I’m not saying make children your friends.  You can do that when they are adults.

What I am saying is, you already know how to connect, reach and teach with compassion, understanding and kindness.

The solution is simpler than you may think.

Identify anything that adults did to you that hurt you as a kid, then, don’t do that!  When it comes to being the adult in the room, it really can be this simple.

FOR THE FUN OF IT:  Grab a notebook and a cup of joe … find a quite place and draw a line down the middle of the page.  On the Left hand side, make a list of all the things you hated – or hurt – about how you were treated in your childhood.  Next, on the Right hand side make a list of all the things you loved about how you were treated.  Do this!

This is Step One to safely TurnAround whatever is not working in your parenting, teaching, i.e., adulting style.  Name it, claim it.  Toss whatever you hated, and keep whatever helped you thrive.  Do this!

And whatever you do, don’t JREDD (Justify, Rationalize, Explain, Defend & Debate) it!  Let that sink in.

So, here’s my story …

I am a FPC – Former Problem Child turned Behavioral Turnaround Specialist, and today I want to walk you through my journey. Right from the start, I have always been deeply passionate about understanding and transforming problematic behaviors in today’s children.

With a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology Counseling and Development, I have devoted my life to supporting the adults in the room; that includes educators, parents, grandparents, administrators and practitioners. 

Together, we use 30 Second TurnArounds to influence and diffuse behaviors in energetically resistant and emotionally lit children.

Over the past 40 years, I have helped tens of thousands of women and men overcome the exhausting and disempowering experiences of teaching and parenting that many of us default to.

Throughout my career, I have worn many hats:  K-8 teacher, K-12 counselor and even a winning volleyball and basketball coach with two district championships under my belt.

I have also worked as a drug alcohol and family counselor, gaining experience in rural, transient, suburban and urban schools.

Additionally, I have had the privilege of working with inner-city kids in programs specifically designed to turn their lives around socially, emotionally and academically.

On a personal note, I have also experienced the challenges of being a single mother. Eventually I remarried and successfully blended a family of three kids while maintaining loving, harmonious relationships with two former spouses and their spouses.

The TurnArounds woven throughout my book, that I share with you, have truly made parenting and teaching an absolute joy for me. 

Joy is what I want for you.  

I have written nine books and developed 12 online programs, so that anyone, no matter where they are, can quickly and effectively turn around unskillful behaviors.
