2- Get to the heart of the problem for you and everyone concerned.
3- Together, create an actionable plan to turnaround your situation into one of peace and productivity.

To accelerate what work we will be doing together, be as concise as possible in answering these 5 questions:

1- What is your intention for what you want to accomplish in our time together? (BE BOLD! Pretend that you can have whatever you want i.e., think of this as being in a café, placing your order.  How do you want your hamburger?  Well done?  Medium?  Do you want fries with that?  Do you want coffee, tea or milk?  Do you want all 3 or something else? Be specific, clear and confident.)

2- What is the problematic area we are going to be turning around? (Go ahead and VENT.)

3- Part 1:  Describe how would you prefer that it be when it’s all said and done, and
Part2:  Why do you think you can’t have it, or it’s impossible or unrealistic?

4- What is your job, position or title?  How many children, faculty or staff you have in your care.  Include degrees and specialties or anything else you’d like me to know.

5- What tools, techniques and strategies have you spent time learning and implementing only to find that even though they should be working, they are not.
(Include any programs, books, etc. that you’ve tried and are working with.)

The more you give me here, the better we can accelerate whatever it is you will be taking steps to turning around.

Today I want to talk about your energy going into this school year … on a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the best energy ever, how is your energy right now?

You can use this exercise in education, home and business from the boardroom to the classroom.  In fact, if you’ve got a divided, disengaged, disinterested and disgruntled group of colleagues or students, use this to get them turned aroundof their own accord.

If you are “put off” (afraid for your job security) by “certain” individuals that you are supposed to be in charge of, let the exercise do the work for you.

DO THIS: Before you begin the exercise, ask everyone what their energy levels are on a scale of 1-10.  10 being the greatest.  Then, after you’ve taken them through the entire process, ask them to rate their energy again on a scale of 1-10.  I think you’ll be very pleased with the positive difference you’ve just made.

Now, let me just say this up front.  Depending on how deeply you want to go into this exercise, it can take 30 -60 minutes.  Today’s training took 38-minutes.

However, whenever I go into a very de-energized work environment for team building, more times that not, I’ll do a 3-hour deep dive with this exercise immediately following my opening Greatness exercise.

I know you will be amazed at how unifying it can be and even more importantly, how you will learn exactly what “certain” individuals are hung up on that together, you can both do something about.  I kid you not!

So today’s 30 Second TurnAround will happen when they figure out that they have a lot more control than they thought … and Voilà the energy in the room is lifted!

This one exercise alone, is how you keep it things moving forward.  Every time someone comes in to see you with a problem, pull this out and use it with them on the spot!  You’ll get it down to 30 seconds or less in no time.

Once you make this a practice, there’s your 30 Second TurnAround with every “problem” that walks through your door!

I am not playing with you here.  Trust me when I say the best solutions come when we don’t over complicate things!

Even if you don’t have a group to do it with, pull out a notebook and do it for yourself.  I know you’ll be glad you did!  I also think you are going to enjoy listening to what the participants came up with for themselves.  They really did a great job.

Grab a cup of coffee, pull out a notepad, sit up straight, put your shoulders back, take a big deep breath, act like you know who you are … and prepare to be amazed!

My Gift to You …

Have you ever had something pull at you that won’t leave you alone?  Well, that’s what’s been happening to me this week.

I was reminiscing about the years that I used to speak and train around the country for National Seminars Group when I remembered my keynote opening exercise.

My OPENING Greatness Exercise

I came up with it because people were being sent to my full-day training by their bosses – most likely because they weren’t very good team players – and they knew it.

There were those who would arrive with scowls on their faces, arms crossed and looking at their BlackBerry phone!  That’s right.  Remember the BlackBerry phones?

There were those that filled the back rows so they could visit and do other things.

And then there were those who grabbed the front seats so that they wouldn’t miss a thing.

Some things never change!

I may have 100, 300 and sometimes even 500 in my audience depending on the city.

I know a Greatness Exercise may seem like a silly thing.  A non-starter really.  But trust me on this.  It’s been field-tested on the toughest audiences in the toughest areas of the country.

In the United States it’s back-to-school time – for everyone – business included.

You’ve got those Professional Development days where, if you are a leader personality style, you most likely want something that will energize and unify your team.

So what’s been pulling at me is that I’ve realized there’s only one of me, and I’m not traveling the country anymore in this way, and there are many who this Opening Greatness Exercise could be helping to unify and bring people’s spirits back up in literally 30 Seconds or Less!
