During those first 9 weeks of school, every single time there was a social or emotional situation in the classroom, lunchroom, or playground, we had an open discussion.

Be Rigorous On Call Outs 

And let me tell you, we didn’t rush it. No matter how long it took, we dove right into it by asking “what” instead of “why” questions.

That’s when the magic happened. More often than not, within 30 seconds or less, I was able to get to the heart of the problem and turn things around.

Don’t avoid, dismiss, or ignore what’s right in front of you. Deal with it head-on, and you’ll see some incredible results in just nine weeks.

[9 Weeks] You Snooze You Lose! Or do you?

Hey there!

A couple of weeks back, I was rambling on about this fancy thing called Ockham’s Razor. It’s all about finding the simplest solution to a problem. You know, not making things overly complicated and stuff.

Anyway, turns out this principle is pretty handy when it comes to dealing with kids too. Sometimes, the simplest solution is actually the most effective (trust me on this).

Now, let me just take a moment to applaud all the effort being put into finding better ways to work with today’s children. I mean, at last count, 20+ programs being adopted by school districts right now. That’s a lot!

But here’s the thing: bigger is not always better. More comprehensive doesn’t always mean immediate success. And let’s not forget about all those activities, strategies and options that can just make your head spin.

As for me, I’ve got my own thing going on. My approach may seem a little unconventional, but it’s actually pretty simple, straightforward and eye opening.

Dear Difference Maker,

It’s that time of year, when schools open their doors again.

In the upcoming days, weeks and months I am going to be writing to you about the adults in any room – teachers, parents, specialists and grandparents – as it relates to our educational community.

Specifically, how to be the adult in the room who can in fact, have all the power, without having to use old, worn-out adulting default tactics (authoritarianism) that never worked for the long haul – except to cause anxiety to skyrocket, tensions to soar and violent outbursts to exceed social norms – at an unprecedented level.

And not just for today’s children but also for adults loving, living and working with them.

Having been my parent’s Problem Child, I made a decision at age 17 to do things differently than the adults in my life had done.

That one decision was a defining moment in my life.

It’s been my North Star.  I’ve been writing, speaking and consulting for forty years about the unconventional approaches I came up with to bring children and adults together.

I’ve been on a long, windy road which included speaking, training and consulting with educational and corporate leaders across the United States.  In just a two year period, I spoke to over 20,000 and I received 100’s of evaluations every single day.

Can you imagine what that would be like, if today’s children evaluated the adult in the room every single day – or even every 9 weeks – on your performance?!

I know! A scary thought right?

That’s what I bring to the table.

Vast, field-tested, experience that being evaluated every single day helped me fine tune and improve upon.  Being an independent contractor for National Seminars Group, they could let me go at a moment’s notice.

I’m just saying that I know the pressure of the name of the game we’re all in.

Let’s get something clear.  I’m not telling you this to impress you, but to impress upon you, that I’ve been in the trenches and what I have to offer – while it may or may not seem unconventional – has extensive evidence-based science and merit.

What I have to share is not complicated, convoluted or time intensive.

I’ve buried the lead for forty years. 

It’s in every book and online program I’ve written and developed in or around Chapter/Module 4!

I’m really excited – and relieved – to be bringing this wonderful bit of information to the forefront within the next few weeks and months.

If you take a look at the books I’ve written you will notice I’ve also enjoyed writing and teaching about a variety of subjects (Color Personality Styles, MasterMinding, etc.) which I have every intention to revisit at some point.

There are many reading this who have been with me for 17+ years and I love that about you.  I just want you to know, that for the sake of Today’s Children, I have a singular focus for the time being and that’s to be a Difference Maker for all those people who need, want and are ready for what I have to offer.

I’m going to do everything in my power to shed a new warm light on what’s exploding our kids today because, while we’re close to doing better with all of the new books and programs being offered, we’re not there yet.

I hope you’ll stay with me as we navigate a new spin on old territory from now to the end of 2023.

I know you know this but it’s so gosh darn important I’m going to say it anyway …

A couple of weeks ago, on TurnAround Thursday I wrote about Ockham’s Razor.

Ockham’s razor is a philosophical principle that states that the simplest solution is usually the best one. This means that when faced with a problem, you want to look for the simplest solution and avoid overcomplicating things.

So, when it comes to working with kids, the simplest solution can be the most effective one (more times than not).

I want to acknowledge all of the work going into finding better ways to work with today’s children.  At my last count, there are 24 top programs school districts are adopting into their curriculum.

With that said, I just want to say this:  bigger, more comprehensive, with lots of activities, strategies and options is not always better, nor immediately applicable.

It’s my job to know what these programs offer – especially in comparison to what I have to offer – which you will see may seem more unconventional, when in fact, my approach is simple, straightforward and humane.

I always give each new program I’m investigating the SNOOZE test.

What is that?

It’s as simple as me falling asleep as I’m reading through a new program’s directions, activities and things to do above and beyond trying to reach and teach my students!

I have ONE FOCUS to begin with: building class unity and community through team work and social skill development.

The educational leader who is determined to herd a bunch of cats into the same room is the leader who can make the biggest and best difference in the lives of every single student.

To do that, you must find out what makes each student tick and then not ever ever ever allow yourself to be afraid of what each student thinks.  For in that one conversation you can learn everything you need to know.

Now, let’s talk about the beginning of the school year. I’m you’ve heard of the infamous “Don’t Smile Until Christmas” method. But let me tell you, as someone who had a tough time in school, I decided to throw that method out the window. Instead, I made it a point to smile at every single student walking through my door. And not only that, I dedicated  the first 9 weeks of the school year to dealing with every single social-emotional incident that came up on the spot. No matter what!

I was determined to tackle all the stuff that made it hard for my students to focus, breathe, and learn. I didn’t let a single eye-roll, hurtful look, or unnecessary comment slip by me.

I did One Thing Different that many teachers are skeptical about – I stopped everything on a dime and teamed up with the offending student(s) to investigate and resolve every single issue. And let me tell you, it worked like a charm!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. With a classroom full of 55-65% at-risk youth, the academic progress might have been a bit slow at first. There was just so much happening that needed to be addressed. But guess what? At around the 9-week mark, everything started to accelerate beyond my wildest expectations!

So, how did I create a safe space for my students, you ask? Well, on Day One of the school year, I had the students come up with the rules themselves. That way, they were fully invested and took charge of regulating the group dynamics. And here’s the surprising part – their rules ended up being much stricter than anything I would have come up with!

And guess what? It worked! Every single school year, with every single student, regardless of their behavioral diagnosis, label, or learning style. I couldn’t believe it myself, but this different approach ended up boosting classroom productivity to the point where my students were making an average of 2.5-3 years of growth in their Stanford Achievement scores each year, no matter who was in my class.

So, here’s my challenge to you this year – Do One Thing Different – with my “click, play” movies in conjunction with my “conversation starter” questions to find out what really makes each kid tick.

It doesn’t have to require a lot of thought or planning. Just try something that will expand your insight, perception, influence and skills with those students who you struggle with. This IS something that will reenergize your spirit and renew your faith in humanity. It’s as simple as dedicating ONE 30 minute class period a week (or more if you want to) over the first 9 weeks.

There is a better way to bring peaceful engagement to your classroom (virtually or in-person), but it’s up to you (and only YOU!) to stop waiting.  Waiting for funding, waiting for someone, somewhere out there, to help you.

Make time to learn how your energy is in fact, influencing the outcomes you are getting whether you mean for it to be or not.  You’ve got to make time to save time.
