As you may well be aware of October is Global ADHD Awareness Month. Do you have mixed feelings with the ADHD label? I do … Recently I was at a Women’s Conference and I specifically sought out women to see what they thought about OWNing their Lives in today’s fast-paced, high-tech, bright-shiny-object attention grabbing world. In exchanging business cards with 17 women I found that 14 out of the 17 quickly disclosed that they’d been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and of those, 10 believed that ADHD was not something a person could heal EVER. Many of them also mentioned that their brain disorder clearly had to be why they were currently not succeeding in their life’s work. It was their fervent belief that “their ADD/ADHD” would only get worse as they grew older. Many women told me that not only did they have it but so did their kids. I was not surprised by this. And yet, to my astonishment, not one of them was particularly relieved or happy to hear from me that there are simple non drug related solutions available that could in fact put an end to the emotional and physical exhaustion that they were weary of. The kind of “wired yet tired” experience that comes from running around in circles, not getting much of anything done – OR – from being so highly focused, directive, hotly intense and unyielding that you literally drive people away (which could very well be a Color Personality Style problematic issue not a disorder). The concept that they could in fact retrain their brains to feel better so they could do better was limited by the mindset they’d let take root in their thinking about was or was not possible for them. They did not see how this ADHD Label had inadvertently become their “limit” and REASON for not actualizing all of their dreams. Having worked with thousands of children, their parents and adults in work settings, I have a different spin on this that I know for certain can bring you the relief and happiness you or a loved one may be seeking. I hope you get a lot out of today’s Blog. Reaching out …
Have You been Labeled?
Today, I want to address something that is of concern to me and that is how we as a society – by and large – tend to accept diagnoses as limits rather than a place to launch into becoming ALL that we can be. In today’s face-paced, high-tech, fear-based CNN (Constantly Negative News) World, it’s no wonder so many people are starting to believe themselves to be ADD/ADHD as a way to give their psyches a little relief so they can maybe figure out what to do witha life being lived with someone else in their driver’s seat. I’m going to highly recommend that no matter what you’ve been diagnosed with that today you refuse to let whatever someone else says limit you in any way, shape or form. Take the wheel back. Drive your own car and you can … own your life
