TEMPLATE FB/LI 5 Things Students Wish Every Teacher Knew

Hey Mary,

I will be the first to tell you that business can be messy.

A longtime client leaves you, someone doesn’t value your program or work, or you just plain get stuck on a new project. Things can be complicated- especially for winners.

Winners show up more. They suck it up, cry, stomp, celebrate, and rinse & repeat. And guess what else? Every successful person I’ve ever worked with used that same formula. The people who quit are usually very smart, creative, and driven… but they stop right before the good stuff. Here are a few tips to keep you going:

Write down your vision.
What’s your end goal with your business? More time? More freedom? Finally taking your family on that European vacation? If you have a clear vision in writing and in your view, it’s harder to let that vision die.

Get real with yourself.
One of my mentors says, “It is simple, but not easy. Success is hard work.” No one won the Heisman, the Oscar, or the gold medal by being half-assed about showing up. Don’t fool yourself. Are you spending a lot of time thinking about goals without taking action?

Get good advice.
The people around me won’t let me quit. I have surrounded myself with a circle of influence. I have a tribe of tough and loving go-getters. A friend and coach emailed me last week and said “Hold fast. We need your confidence.” Get supportive people like that in your circle!

Want more great tips that help you build your business? Check out my Facebook page!

If you love what you do and you know you can help others, there’s no reason to quit when things get messy. Stopping is not an option. See you at the finish line!

You got this,

UpRoot a Victim Mindset
Excerpt from Victim No More: Diffusing Bully Behaviors UTrain Program

frog

What this illustrates about changing unproductive behavior is that, lacking a shocking, disruptive event, we tolerate a slow and steady increase of pain.  It is numbing, rather than alarming.

We have possibly learned that we are basically powerless to change “certain” situations and approaches in our lives that are harmful  …

We don’t meet people by accident. They are meant to cross our path for a reason.

5 Ways To Turn Your Breakup Into A Breakthrough

Breakups are difficult moments. You’ll feel heartbroken and eat ice cream out of the tub as you reminisce on all the fun times you had with your ex. You’ll feel sorry for yourself for days, if not weeks or even months. But, inevitably, you’ll move on – or so we hope!

The trouble with the cycle of breakups and dating is that so many people continue to perform the same trends in their dating life over and over again. If that sounds like you, then you’re probably slowly getting disillusioned with love. Yikes! So, what can you do about this? You can begin by taking your breakup and using that pain as a tool to grow and improve yourself. It doesn’t sound very easy, but it’s workable!
Here are five ways to convert your breakup into a breakthrough.
REFLECT ON THE BREAKUP
Maybe you were hit with a post-breakup realization, or you are now falling apart without them. Whatever the case may be, it can be tempting to go back, kiss, and repair the relationship. But remember – you broke up with them in the first place for a reason.
  • WHY THE BREAKUP?
Unpleasant as it may be, it’s important to remind yourself why you’re in this predicament. Things don’t happen randomly – something brought you here, and those reasons are valid. They must be honored and reflected upon post-breakup so you can achieve a breakthrough.
  • BALANCING THE POSITIVE WITH THE NEGATIVE
Positive thinking is good and all, but a study has shown that focusing on positive memories can worsen one’s heartache while reflecting on the negative helps exes recover and heal faster. While obviously, you shouldn’t focus entirely on the negative aspects and demonize your partner, it’s important to note that attachment feelings don’t just magically vanish.
They can be hard to deal with in the aftermath of a breakup, especially if you don’t want them. With that in mind, reminding yourself about your ex’s negative qualities or the wrong parts of the relationship can help keep those rose-tinted glasses away.
  • NOTING ANY PATTERNS
Reflecting post-breakup is a great way to note down some patterns – be it in the partners you choose, the problems that crop up, the way you react to certain situations, or even how your relationships end every time. This way, you can make sure that you can note down the lessons you learned from this last relationship and use them to break the cycle for a healthier future partnership.

Observe Yourself

STEP ASIDE. CHECK YOURSELF out. If you find that you are trying to get other people to support something that you’ve done or to support you because of something that you feel has happened to you, observe yourself.

Are you feeling guilty in some way? Are you feeling violated? Up to this point, your perspective is coming from a place inside you where there could be a past hurt. Look for it.

If, from an observer’s position, you can see that this situation is not as intense as you experienced it, then something is presenting itself for you to look at and resolve.

Pretend you are watching yourself on television. How are you participating in this situation? Observing yourself is a great self- correcting strategy. It can get you out of the victim position and back in the driver’s seat. You may quickly adjust your manner and tone.

Sometimes it’s not always easy or delightful to see yourself as you really are. Be gentle with yourself and know it’s just an issue of fine-tuning.  It can be very healing to know that you can be in charge of how you are viewed by people who matter to you. Self-observation is a matter of perspective, yours.

It elevates self-concept and self-esteem to observe yourself correcting a situation successfully. Observing yourself can also help you become better focused and emotionally available to the people you are interacting with. Being fully present allows you a more in-depth understanding of yourself and what pushes your buttons.

From an observer’s position, you can immediately see the solution and determine how to deal more effectively with this and similar situations in the future. Getting a clear picture from an outside position increases the probability of success.

If there’s a way to do it better . . . find it.

BREAKER LINE

Dear Difference Maker,

It’s happening!  Educators around the country are gradually getting back to their classrooms and with it may come heightened energy and pent up emotion.

In other words, the classroom management problems that existed before COVID may in fact be even more magnified now.

Troubling home experiences magnified by the financial pressures brings many students back to school emotionally off kilter.

Electronics babysitting students during long days at home, diminishing academic interest and social engagement now magnified.

 12

Chinese word for crisis can be translated as both danger and opportunity.
May we open our eyes to both.

While we often hear, “I just want things to return back to normal” this may just be the most dangerous lamenting we can let ourselves say or do.  Things have changed and many of those things are laying the foundation for healing today’s children … and ourselves!  The real danger is going backwards to the way things were.  Let’s keep going forward to ease into a greater humanity.

One example is virtual learning.  Never before have teachers been inside of student’s homes in this way.  Everyone has been stretched to the max.  However, stretching is a good thing when you decide it is.  Never before have such a vast number of teachers and parents worked so closely together to keep their kids in front of the screen for their daily classes!

To quote Mathew Portell, Principal of Fall-Hamilton Elementary, an internationally recognized innovative model school for trauma-informed practices in Metro Nashville Public Schools …

“We required our teachers to call every student every day
and virtual learning shot up. Why?  Connection.”

He goes on to say, “We’re not asking our teachers to be therapists.  Studies are confirming that it is the consistent, little interactions that add up and are often times far more impactful than therapy.”

I will add to his statement that it is every infinitesimal attitude, vibe and tone you offer in every single interaction is accumulative and over time will either calm or agitate (regulate or deregulate) any child you are working with. (To learn more about the energetics of teaching click here.)

Virtual learning has required us all to reach out and touch each other’s lives via the Internet or through phone calls, drive-bys, stop-ins, etc.  New levels of energetic engagement, encouragement and connection has happened.  Danger: Do not let this slip away just because students are back in the classroom.  Keep doing what you did virtually to be energetically engaging and interesting.

Here’s your opportunity to embrace the gifts that taking manageable steps can bring to  social engagement to the forefront can bring in your classroom NOW!

Social engagement is happening whether you are in control of it or not.  Take the last nine weeks of this school year and direct what’s happening socially and emotionally in your classroom with “done for you” conversation starters, so your students end up learning how to care and be protective of each other going forward.

By simply directing the conversation one class period a week over a period of nine weeks you can make Make A Difference this year that transcends anything that’s ever happened for them and for you.

Mental Health has been on the forefront, but now it’s a MUST DO for educators.  Like it or not.  No one is coming to fix this.  Waiting for “professionally trained” outside reinforcements is not happening.  Waiting for your administration to buy in can take how long?

For the past forty years I have been reaching out to work with administrators and teachers on the importance of social emotional engagement first and foremost before academics.

Teachers, you have the power to make your classroom every student’s safe space on every conceivable level in order for their minds to relax, breathe and function. So actual accelerated learning can and will occur beyond your greatest imagination.

Administrators, you can take this same 9 weeks and direct your faculty and staff into conversations where they experience common ground.  Every teacher needs to experience incremental shifts and then take it forward to the next step and the next step.  9 Weeks of these conversation starters and it’s accumulative.

For the past forty years, even though explosive behavior has been steadily increasing, padded rooms are being built, room clears are on the rise, we still here the three most common default statements:

I don’t have time to deal with social emotional stuff.
I didn’t go to college to be a counselor.
My plate is too full.
I’ve got to get these kids ready for their annual tests or I’ll be out of a job.

In learning to listen to people, what each of these default statements might be saying is, “Emotional stuff really scares me and I don’t know how to deal with emotional stuff so I’d really rather someone else do it for me.”

I’m not going to lie.  Mastering the Social-Emotional Learning tools and techniques is not only necessary for today’s educator, but it does in fact take a lot of time to learn to teach children how to put clarifying words to feelings.

Social emotional engagement is already happening and it happens to be how children learn best, so why not direct it where you want it to go?

9 Weeks is a primer to my upcoming Teaching Energetics self-paced online program which will elevate the effectiveness and ease with which SEL programs can be absorbed and assimilated to build a comradery between students that stays with them going forward.

It’s a scientific fact that teachers who are stressed out deregulate their students.

Never before has there been a moment in time where all of your reasons NOT to take the social emotional deep dive have become the reasons why you MUST take this next step in your professional development.

Because of this upside down school year, the outside pressures are off.

There is no way you can cram 9 months of learning into the last 9 weeks of this school year to get all your students caught back up.

But you can Make A Difference now that is long term and carries into next year.

There is a way to get your students minds back in the game by harnessing social engagement that builds comradery and community going forward.

In my forty years in education I have found that that one thing that helps students excel academically is knowing that in your classroom they are safe and that their classmates are their teammates from this school year going forward.  When they feel safe in your care, when they know they are safe with every student in the room, their brains can breathe and the frontal lobe lights can turn on and executive function is in play.

Study after study has shown that social and emotional competencies correlate strongly with children’s academic performance and their overall health, well-being, and ultimately, life outcomes. Yet actually helping children develop their social-emotional skills has proved to be a daunting challenge.

Contrary to what many believe, the route to emotional self-awareness and intelligence lies in social engagement rather than social instruction.  Meaning that while SEL is a great (long overdue) addition to the educational process its still not dealing with the heart of the problem:  the classroom culture.  And you’re not going to like what I say next, but culture is established by a teacher’s leadership, expectation and vibe.

You Can Always Begin Again: 9-Week Curriculum

No matter what quarter of the school year you are in, if you want to build a safe community, you must make a safe space for students to find their voice and take ownership.  Beginning with creating their own list of New Rules is unifying. It gets them all on the same side.  They are the ones that will hold each other accountable, and let me tell you, that really lightens a teacher’s load. If anything, you’ll have to tell them to not be so hard on themselves and each other.

If you want to be able to reach and teach students it all begins with a safe, inclusive classroom. Then community begins, with students coming together to talk about what’s important to them.  Even though there will be differing opinions, talk it out until you find alignment.  If you can’t find alignment, give it a day and come back to it the next day.  Don’t stop working on it until you find the sweet spot.

The only way to teach safe social engagement is to DO social engagement deliberately, intentionally; and this 9-Week Curriculum will help you through the maze of what’s really going on just below the surface.

There’s no better time than the present.

The last 9 Weeks of any school year – and particularly this chaotic school year – are pivotal in creating comradery, so they can end the year with the excitement and expectancy of getting on with the next school year.

Learn more about how to make your classroom safe, all-inclusive and hum with academic productivity with my “9 Weeks to A Make A Difference Year” Curriculum.

Your Road Map:  1) one class period a week for nine weeks: play a heart connecting movie and/or engage students in a team building activity which you will then use to, 2) direct the conversation using my “done for you” questions to, 3) explore what is really on in your students’ hearts and minds.

When you follow my 9-Week Make A Difference Year Curriculum you will …

  • slow everything down and breathe a collective breath.
  • ease your students into constructive and productive social emotional engagement with “done for you” activities and discussion questions.
  • learn deeper levels about each student by listening to them discuss “what came up” for them about the movie or activity.
  • start tuning-in to your students’ “hidden stressors” that each of them is struggling with daily, not just academically, but socially and emotionally to build a common bond.
  • experience the transformational power of my WIW – “What, If, When” – technique, to shift the energy of the room in 30 seconds or less as intense situations come up (and they will come up)!
  • see unskillful behaviors with new eyes of understanding, hear with healing ears.
  • be thrilled at how a safe, inclusive and caring community will yield calm minds and accelerate learning.
  • marvel at how quickly students – particularly those who are normally behind – are able to catch up and even pull ahead.

BREAKER LINE

Dear DM 1

You’ve tried:

PBS. PBIS. CPS. SEL. CHAMPS. RULERS. Trauma-Informed Care. Zones of Regulation. PAX. Restorative Circles & Justice.

… and you still feel like your classroom is in chaos.

WHY? What can you do now?

It IS possible to be highly effective teacher and be kind, compassionate and have a highly productive, peaceful classroom. Energetics can help make it happen. 2021 is the YEAR!

You know you aren’t a perfect teacher but you feel you have teaching skills well in hand to be effective academically. The newest training models are excellent tools you have used. And yet, you hear yourself saying it’s not enough, and there is nothing else that you feel will work except funding for more professional adult support for when you get back in your classrooms.

You know that if you must use physical force, you can’t do that. You aren’t the type of person who can yell, scream or physically break up fights. It’s not in your nature and it’s just too much to ask of any teacher.  You worry about what we are teaching our kids to endure when it comes to danger?!

In the real world when danger is happening, we would run away and get help; but in our classrooms we are teaching children to stay, and they are internalizing it, so if it happens out in the world what will our kids do?

You’re stressed about more and more parents literally giving up with homework and remote learning. Parents, maybe like yourself, are juggling so many balls in the air. When adding to their to-do list something that their child didn’t do well in school, it can be daunting.  When parents are unable to help, many teachers feel they must carry the ball by themselves, creating an energetic chasm that is only widening.

You’re concerned that we are not challenging all of your students enough.  There is fear that making higher-achieving students team up with struggling learners is going to hold them back and bore them.

You are not professionally trained to help today’s traumatized kids!  You may be questioning, “At what point do you want me to teach, and at what point to be a therapist?  “How am I to juggle all those things? I’ve already got a full plate. Are you going to take something off so I can make room for more training?”

You are overwhelmed with so many behavior plans for so many students.  If you must put so many students on positive behavioral plans gathering so much data every single day, you know you won’t have time to 1) teach the curriculum, 2) check in with your students, 3) build relationships and 4) be taking care of yourself so you won’t end up with compassion fatigue.

Believe it or not, you’re not alone. You can break the cycles of failure in your struggling students.

And it’s simpler (and far less stressful) than you think.

Thousands of people have felt the same confusion, overwhelm and exhaustion you may be feeling right now and found a way forward with my field-tested strategies associated with my Energetics System now adapted for Teachers.

Follow me on my new Facebook page this year for more great tips!

There is a better way to bring peaceful engagement to your classroom (virtually or in-person), but it’s up to you (and only YOU!) to stop waiting.  Waiting for funding, waiting for someone, somewhere out there, to help you.  Make time to understand how your energy is in fact, influencing the outcomes you are getting.  You’ve got to make time to save time.

It’s that time of year when our kids are headed back to school.  New beginnings always feel good, until they don’t.

What if you could get your kids to do what you want when you want by simply dialing in their Color Energy Style? Would you be willing to simply take one hour a day to learn something new about you kiddos? It’s entirely possible that communication could be so much easier and enjoyable for everyone.

Dear Difference Maker,

This is such a humbling classic that is  touching hearts everywhere, so grab a cup of jo and ‘take 5’ to watch today’s movie.

teddy

Click here to see why this story makes such a big difference …

One of the unexpected surprises of the Teddy Stallard Story movie was the response we received from people working in the entrepreneurial, organizational and corporate environments.

While it was obviously perfect for teachers, parents and grandparents I had failed to realize that the most amazing value of this story is the emotion it stirs up in us all; it makes us want to be better people and treat each other, not just children, more affirmatively and compassionately.

When I’ve shown the movie to adult audiences, it still amazes me at how quickly it softens so many tough exteriors people believe they must project.

It’s been reported to me by others using the movie that when it has been shown to men in corporations, most of whom were directors, managers and owners, time after time many of these men openly admitted that they had to stop the movie to collect themselves.

One Fortune 500 company owner told me personally that, while he had heard the story many times before, he still ended up using his shirt sleeve to wipe away the out pour of tears.

Conversely, when women in corporations watched the movie, the reports came in that they did not initially admit to being emotionally affected by it. Only with a little additional prodding would they admit that they were deeply affected and that they did in fact (silently) cry!

I’ve had a “director” personality style woman come up to me and say, “I knew at the start of the story what you were going to try to make me cry, and I was determined not to, but when Teddy said, “You smell like my mom used to” you got me! I cried buckets and it felt long overdue.

When I was traveling around the country speaking in the late 90’s, one of the things I was asked most often at Women’s Conferences was, “How do I not get emotional—or cry—at work?” Men, on the other hand, are now learning how to access – to healthier degrees – their emotional selves, and this is generating vast improvement in how we treat each other.

Men and women alike are all products of our childhoods and our environments. There are a lot of lost and lonely people moderately functioning in our places of work and community. To generate a home and work environment that brings out the very best in people, you simply keep acknowledging people like they really matter.

This movie is a GREAT way to KICK-OFF your upcoming Fall Event or In-Service.

Thank you for the difference You make!
